While Microsoft has always had a hard time selling consoles in Japan, with some glimmers of hope here and there, former Final Fantasy man Hironobu Sakaguchi sees an opportunity for Xbox 360 this year.
With the strongest line-up they’ve ever had, Sakaguchi believes Microsoft has an opportunity to generate big sales in the homeland of Sony and Nintendo this holiday season.
In an exclusive with Edge magazine, Sakaguchi said: “Consoles like the 360 and PS3 have still to make a breakthrough in terms of sales [in Japan], and the market is very much about Nintendo.”
The PS3 and Xbox 360 are clearly lacking titles to appeal to the Japanese gamer, but this is about to change, and the Xbox 360 in particular has an opportunity to prove itself at the end of the year. Its line-up is the best Microsoft has ever had in Japan.”
Microsoft has been hard at work to lure over big Japanese developers for years. Sakaguchi’s company, Mistwalker, has already released one Xbox 360-exclusive RPG aimed at Japanese gamers – Blue Dragon. And another, Lost Odyssey, is on its way and will be released on December 6th, just in time for the holiday rush.
With other big names like Koei and Square Enix also showing their support for the 360, it will definitely be very interesting to see what the year end sale numbers from Japan will show.
