New Sheriff In Town: Skate Outsells Tony Hawk 2:1

Activision’s Tony Hawk series has long been revered for being the best pixelated skating experience hands down. Through the years there have been numerous challengers trying to dethrone the reigning champ. From Grind Session, Thrasher: Skate And Destroy, and ESPN X Games (all pretty decent I should add), the challengers have all been knocked out one by one by the juggernaut that is the Tony Hawk series.

Well things have finally changed and there’s a new sheriff in town. In a recent conference call, EA said that their take on skateboarding, known as SKATE, has outsold Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground at a ratio of 2:1. What makes this even more amazing is that Proving Ground was released on DS, PS2, PS3, Wii and X360, while EA’s SKATE is out only on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Has there been a changing of the guard? We’ll just have to wait and see. But the spirit of competition should bring out the best in both once the next games of each franchise hit the market.
