With the recently released “Rock Band” microphone pretty much spilling the beans, it should come as no surprise that Electronic Arts officially announced today the planned release of “Rock Band” for the Wii. They also announced the European launch of “Rock Band” in some form, which is set to take place during the first quarter of EA’s financial year–somewhere between April and June of 2008.

During a question-and-answer session with the press yesterday, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello revealed that a Wii version was indeed coming. No details yet on how they intend to handle downloadable content, what pricing will look like, when it will be released, or whether or not the Wiimote’s additional functionality will come into play.

In April, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos hinted that exploration of the Wiimote’s unique capabilities was something they were definitely interested in taking advantage of. “We will, at some time, bring Rock Band to every [important] platform,” Rigopulos said, adding that the Wiimote was a consideration, going on to say, “I think the Wiimote is something that holds enormous promise.”

With details scarce at this time, it’s hard to be too gung-ho, but this is still exciting news nonetheless for the over 20 million+ Wii users who’ve been looking on in envy as their fellow current-gen gamers enjoy one of the best multiplayer experiences to come down the pike in a loooong time!
