Earlier last year there were reports of an epic partnering between Electronic Arts and Steven Spielberg on developing a future game for the Wii. EA has now revealed what they deem to be “the ultimate Wii game.”
BOOM BLOX is a unique puzzle game that mixes co-op play, themed environments and over 300 levels in Tiki, Medieval, Frontier, and Haunted settings (a few of which you can have a look at in our BOOM BLOX gallery). But wait it gets better! There’s a wide range of characters, from “baseball- throwing monkeys” to “block-laying chickens” (dead serious), with more outrageous characters to be included in the game.
The game revolves around using motion control in various ways to solve a wide range of ‘block’ puzzle challenges. BOOM BLOX also encourages players to develop their own techniques and strategies to get through the many challenges provided. Taking that one step further, players can ‘remix’ pre-existing stages to their personal liking and share them with their friends via WiiConnect24.
Steven Spielberg gives the game his mark of approval: “I am a gamer myself, and I really wanted to create a video game that I could play with my kids. BOOM BLOX features an enormous amount of fun challenges and cool scenarios for your kids to solve or for you to master together.”
“My inspiration for this game came while I was playing Wii for the first time. From the initial concept to what the game is today, it’s always been built around the innovations the Wii brings to playing games. BOOM BLOX plays on the enjoyment of building and knocking down blocks, something that can appeal innately to kids and adults of all ages.”
Sounds great! I for one am enjoying developers starting to at least apply some sort of creativity to developing new games for the Wii. Really what’s not to enjoy about blowing up a bunch of blocks with some outrageous characters, all in an interactive themed setting? Sign me up.
BOOM BLOX is scheduled for a spring release on the Nintendo Wii and mobile phones.
