During the D.I.C.E. Summit that took place in Las Vegas about a week ago, Stephen Totilo from MTV’s Multiplayer blog talked to Cliff Bleszinski — better known as CliffyB among the gaming crowds — who apparently thinks that PC gaming is in disarray and says that Epic is currently focused on creating high quality games for consoles.
“I think people would rather make a game that sells 4.5 million copies than a million and “Gears” is at 4.5 million right now on the 360. I think the PC is just in disarray… what’s driving the PC right now is ‘Sims’-type games and ‘WoW‘ and a lot of stuff that’s in a web-based interface. You just click on it and play it. That’s the direction PC is evolving into. So for me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we’re doing. It’s important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we’re at,” Bleszinski told Multiplayer.
While hard to argue with, that kind of talk might be a punch below the belt to PC gamers who have religiously bought the company’s games. After all, creating the Unreal games for PC is what gave Epic their rock star status among game developers in the first place.
Though it seems Epic Games’ vice president Mark Rein agrees with Bleszinski about where the company’s focus should be, seeing as he thinks that consoles are stealing hardcore PC gamers.

Well unfortunately that is what seems to be happening. The game company’s are putting most of their effort into consoles. Guess i had better start practicing with a controller and get away from a mouse and key board.

I really can’t disagree with that. But I’m also failing to see how its a punch below the belt for people who played unreal or any of their other PC games. For one, PC gaming was in a much better place then, and either way it has no bearing on what he thinks of the gamers. If you like unreal, you’re still playing it. If you’re the point and click Sims player, you’re playing that. If you like both, bravo for your versatility in tastes.

What he’s basically saying to PC gamers is “what, no more dollars from you? k tnx bai”. Which is totally understandable, it’s all about turning a profit at the end of the day after all. It’s just that many feel that Epic is today what it is because they bought their PC games, and now that cliff has a lambo under his ass, gamers that “made him” are feeling a bit thrown aside, especially as UTIII was too little too late.
