Updated / Resistance 2 like you’ve never seen it before
BY Rain Anderson Feb. 26th, 2008

resistance2-huge-feb26.jpg

Here’s a little bit of delicious eye candy for all you Resistance fans - Resistance 2 screenshots in extreme size. And by extreme size I mean extreme size - ~5,000px times ~3,000px. We also have them available in 10,000px x 5,000px, but…you know…that would be ridiculous.

Brace yourself though, these images reveal that the game doesn’t look quite as good as previously thought. The images we’ve seen so far are obviously smaller versions of the same shots, and when resizing images this huge, the visual flaws tend to get hidden up pretty well.

But here we go: one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven.

Update / Ok, a lot of people seem to think we resized the old images and made them 7 times bigger or something. Rest easy, we did not. As said earlier in this post, the original images were 10,000px in size. And they were released in this form by Sony themselves, so we in fact sized them down 50% to approx. 5,000px so they wouldn’t be too ridiculously huge. The point was to give the fans of the R franchise a very detailed look at R2. As Sony probably wanted when they released them in this über-size. You’re welcome.

then again, this is all pre-alpha stage material. You guys are acting like if this was final code, common give Insomniac a break. In any case you guys should make this comparison to the upscaled crap that Halo 3 is.

Keep in mind that this resolution is totally redundant, and stating that they don’t look good is a waste of time.

The game will run at an absolute max of 1920×1080, which is even unlikely. 1280×720 is the likely resolution.

I say we wait until we see the game in action to say whether or not it looks good. Personally, I have my fingers crossed for 60fps, which would have me forgive just about any visual deficiency…

Oh, I get it now we’re supose to play with the TV two inches from our eyes because we’re all going to zoom up to complain about something. This is so pointless you zoomed in every game at a certain point will look bad when zoomed in they’re made by pixels.

lol, every PS3 fanboy from the PS3-fanboy central known as N4G is going apeshit over this. They surely do take EVERY little thing and twist it as if it’s a personal attack against their manhood don’t they? Gotta love the fanboys :D

No one said R2 looks like crap, just that these big screens show that the game doesn’t look “quite as good” as the smaller ones would have us think. Which it doesn’t and even a blind man can see that. But fanboys don’t have eyes I guess.

Anyway, the game is still in development, surely the graphics are not final.

only an abnormal would say that?

the screens are 7x the original SIZE

      5,000px times ~3,000px —not 1920*1080

thats 7.5x the ORIGINAL SIZE or (750% the original size at 1080p)

Garbage box 360 games would look like N64 games at that REZ

even at a STRETCHED RATIO of 7:1 the game looks awesome.

can you even imgaine what it would look like at 1080p .

” everyboday says that the game will murder all x360 games graphically at 1080p ” not at 7.5x the ORIGINAL IMAGE

Dude, it’s not like they took the original size image and made it 7x bigger, stretched as you say, you’d never get this quality and details. These were captured at an extremely high resolution and then sized down, which makes the same pics look better at @1920. The point being that ANY images, be it a screenshot or a photograph, if you have it in very big size and then size it down, it would lose details, making it look better that it actually is.

We haven’t seen anything from R2 yet except these huge screens sized down. So don’t make judgements until you see some high-rez gameplay videos or something.

But why do I even bother, calling the 360 “garbage box 360″ shows that you’re a fanboy who can’t be reasoned with.

I don’t understand, is this the proper resolution for the screens or were they resized, as in is this how the game will actually run? I mean if you say that you have 10,000 x 5,000 pixel shots, those would look even worse obviously, but wouldn’t any game screen at these kinds of resolutions? Once again, I’m not sure what to take of this…I’m finding myself hard pressed to believe that these are actually representative of what would be shown on a TV. Am I supposed to expect super detailed, crisp textures at these resolutions? (I’m not saying I’m not, I honestly don’t know)

      Can anyone explain?

yeah, this is how the game really looks. Sony released the images today in 10,000px resolution, I got them too. But the game wont run on at this resolution on your PS3 so everything won’t be so big on the screen when you’re playing so of course it will look better. Overall, these shots don’t mean that much, they just allow us to see all the details up close and personal, that’s all.

you are all idiots. take a screenshot of something that is 1920 x 1080. now blow it up to whatever size these are. all you did was increase the size of the pixels, not make more of them. there is still only the detail of a 1920 x 1080 ( 2,073,600 pixels by the way) it just looks like you are standing on top of your tv and and can now see the idividual pixels. a blown up picture of a picture is not an accurate representation of the detail in any game. showing a picture at its native resolution is the best way to that.

Why would Insomniac want to release these awful shots to the public! The textures are atrocious!
Reminds me of Quake! Anyway, I thought RFOM sucked big time so I am not keeping my hopes up for this iteration! I am putting my money on gears of War 2, even though I haven’t seen anything yet!

.. I hope Insomniac puts some serious overtime in the gameplay aspect of this 2nd iteration. Because the 1st one was simply boring!

It’s exactly how the game looks, just really up close and personal. Why can’t you just admit that ? There’s no question that it will look better on TV while running on a PS3. No one is trying to say the game looks bad, it’s just you. Stop trying to find issues where there are none.

These images are for print only. Publishers need higher rez pics so they can be put into publications. They WILL look blown up if you look at them via a screen! Screen 72 dpi, Publication 600/1200 dpi, you do the math!

If you look closely you will see a sharp contrast in resolution with how things are made and the images that are painted on them. I am sure that Insomiac blew up the scene many times the original size using the game engine to get these images.

This is a very interesting take on things by this website, I would be interested in seeing how other games stack up when given the same treatment that R2 has gotten in this post.

Its interesting that this site has done this with no other games, but I am sure that the question I posed above does not fall in line with your agenda, I won’t hold my breath for any logical response on your part.

Its funny how they also try to preempt any criticism of the validity of this post by writing, “Update / Ok, a lot of people seem to think we resized the old images and made them 7 times bigger or something. Rest easy, we did not. As said earlier in this post, the original images were 10,000px in size. What a joke, as you have already been called out thoroughly by other users I will leave it at that, I will expect the same treatment for all games when media is released from now on so we can see the level of detail at super close range that no normal person will be playing the game at.

Shame on the author of this “Article”, very poor showing.

Hi CG, thanks for your comment, even if it is a bit presumptuous.

To address your concern: if any other developer or publisher were to release images of a high profile game in this size, we’d gladly post them, why shouldn’t we ? The thing is that only a few ever do. But I’ll say this right now - if official images such as these are ever released for Gears of War 2, and I bring Gears as an example since people tend to compare that to R2 the most, I’ll be among the first one to post them. Comparing these two games would be awesome.

I actually think the game looks good, hence the “delicious eye candy” part of the post. But hey, if you wish to paint me a PS3 hater for liking how one if its exclusive games looks, you are free to do so of course. But know that I own both the 360 and the PS3, and am also quite looking forward to R2’s 60-player matches after witnessing the online mayhem in Frontlines.

      @ [Soma]
Sony is the publisher, so it’s natural they’d be releasing stuff like this.

      Rain,
Thanks for the prompt reply, but I think you were a bit misleading in your blog post in an attempt to be controversial. As I have stated in my above comment and you have done nothing to refute this, it is safe to say that ANY game blown up to this proportion would look less than stellar.

So therefore your comment “Brace yourself though, these images reveal that the game doesn’t look quite as good as previously thought. The images we’ve seen so far are obviously smaller versions of the same shots, and when resizing images this huge, the visual flaws tend to get hidden up pretty well.” isn’t really valid, as this could be said about anything in life, people, paintings, video games, movies, etc. So to clarify, do you thing that R2 played on a regular HDTV at a NORMAL viewing distance would look like this?

I would issue you a challenge, find another game on PC or a Console with pics that are this big and we can see if the game looks as good up close as it does from a normal viewing resolution.

Your point about owning a PS3 and a 360 really holds no water when trying to justify posting a blog with obvious flaws in logic as you have here. And though this site is obviously a place to post blogs, i.e. someone’s opinion, it just bothers me when people have no integrity with the things they post.

In the end its your choice if you want to sit here and justify your blog post that obviously isn’t being fair to the game or to the people who read your post. Though I appreciate you responding, you have done nothing to demonstrate any integrity in the face of obvious questions about the usefulness or logical importance of the material you have posted.

As for most of the comments, save for a few most people have the sense to look at this for what it is, a post that adds nothing of intellectual value. Your comment about R2 not looking as good as we thought should be followed up by here are pictures of Gears of War blown up to ridiculous proportions as a comparison, but your failure to do this just makes you look like a desperate hater regardless of what reality might be.

As usual, I expect the same attempts by you to dismiss any of the many good points I have made and just focus on the unimportant. You seem like a nice enough person, just not a person to be trusted to put any amount of thought and effort into assembling a post of any intellectual significance. Good day.

“..it is safe to say that ANY game blown up to this proportion would look less than stellar.”

Of course it would, I haven’t tried to say otherwise. If one were to inrease the size of a 1,280px or 1,920px image to 10,000px, it would look absolutely horrible, a total mess and nothing near the quality these images have. Go ahead, try it yourself.

What you’re doing is missing the point - these images are not blown up, they are in fact source images. Just because we play the games at 720p or 1080p, doesn’t mean the devs can’t take screenshots at a much, much higher resolution. And all I’m saying is that these images reveal a few things like textures, and items in the background to be of a little less quality than how they looked on the smaller screenshots. Exactly like they would if a photo originally sized at 10,000px were to be sized down to 1920px - a few things wouldn’t be as clear(thus leaving te impression that it looks better) and you wouldn’t even be able to see some things because they’re simply so small now.

The entire point was to give people a closer look at things on the shots we’ve all already seen, things that aren’t perhaps even visible on the smaller shots.

What you’re trying to do is create drama where there is none. But to satify you, I’ll respond to your questions one by one. Do let me know if I’ve missed any.

“I would issue you a challenge, find another game on PC or a Console with pics that are this big and we can see if the game looks as good up close as it does from a normal viewing resolution.”

Again, I never said it would.

“So to clarify, do you thing that R2 played on a regular HDTV at a NORMAL viewing distance would look like this?”

Again, of course it wouldn’t. And I haven’t said it would. These images are insanely big, after all :)

“Your comment about R2 not looking as good as we thought should be followed up by here are pictures of Gears of War blown up to ridiculous proportions as a comparison..”

Why should it? You’re still under the assumption that I increased the size of these images, while in fact I have not. And like said before, I’ll gladly post up GoW2 images in this size should Epic or Microsoft indeed release them in this insane resolution.

I fail to see the purpose of your initial post other than your desire to be an ass. Obviously you fail in your assertion about no one caring about my post as you responded without being addressed and the creator of this post has also responded. So your words say one thing, but your two responses show that you indeed do care, LOL. Owned by logic once again.

You seem to like the PS3 to some degree but I surely hope never to run into a dim whit such as yourself on PSN any time soon. The anonymous nature of the internet gives social outcast like yourself an outlet to feel like they are in power, something they lack in real life. Do everyone a favor and take that internet big talk to someone who is easily intimidated by rants of a sorry excuse for a man.

      @ Rain
Again, thank you for your response. I guess I take what I post very seriously and I do like to make things as clear as possible when I do.

After your most recent response I fail to see the purpose of your post if you acknowledge that any game would show flaws if it were blown up to proportions that it wasn’t mean to be.

So I guess your comment about R2 not looking as good as we all thought was you being facetious for effect, or controversy. Then I rest my case as basically you were just attempting at creating a story to generate some hits but in your responses it seems like you are well aware of the flaws in what you submitted. While I do not agree with these tactics, to each his own, and it is good to know that you do realize the logical flaws in what you have presented.

I could go into specifics, but it seems like you are the only on here willing to have an honest conversation about what you have posted, if people like Dan are any indication of the quality of people that frequent this site may God have mercy on your soul.

Haha Dan, verbally owned, no need to respond to you really, night son. Tell you mom I’ll be over later.

      @ Rain:
Not blown up, higher res, etc. etc. The fact is the images you posted are not the way the game will or is supposed to be played realistically. You are stating the obvious because just like my analogy about a painting, the game is made to be viewed a certain way and that is how its being developed. FACT.

The fact remains that your post was seriously misleading and didn’t do a good job of making your point about R2. FACT.

The fact remains that I said if Danny boy was an indication of what the frequent visitors to this site are like then I am sorry for you, I actually said that you seemed like a decent person who probably had a certain agenda for your post, thats all.

The fact remains that you have again not addressed any of the points about your post that I brought up and are now attempting to feign being insulted to get out of having to be accountable for your inaccurate material. But I digress, just like you perhaps my written words have come off a bit harsh to you, so if I offended you I apologize and all the users on this site except for Danny boy who puts the word Ass in Asshole, LOL.

Anyhow, at least I have brought up some excellent points about your material that are very valid as is evident by your evasive tactics so at least anyone who reads through the comments can be a bit more informed about what you did. I’m sorry if that make you uncomfortable for someone to call you out, but you have to admit that it wasn’t very clever what you tried to do in this post.

Seems like you have a boy fan Rein, you have to give Dan an A for effort in trying to defend your honor, he really put himself out there for you and got a verbal ass whoopin, that sort of loyalty is only second to people who still support George W. Bush now that his approval rating is in the teens, astonishing.LOL.

Just to let you know, blowing up images is a complete misrepresentation of a game’s actual visual fidelity. I don’t recall the technical term for the operation, but almost every game utilizes it in some respect, bear with me: as the player’s camera gets farther from an object on screen the visual quality of the object in view is decreased by replacing the hi-rez textures with low-rez textures on the fly to reduce resource consumption without discernably reducing visual quality. As the objects approach the camera the textures are likewise replaced with higher resolution ones. Other similar methods are similarly utilized. Zoom in to some Gears of War enemies that are hundreds of feet away and they’ll look like crap because the lo-rez textures are applied.

well, R1 hasnt had the best visuals but was a great game,
i will wait and see how R2 looks when played, sure it’ll be a great one too!
Im not a fanboy, i just dont give that much to graphics,
far more important is a good level-design and an ass-kickin’ multiplayer (like in 1)!

hell these pics large or small look fantastic to me. I fail to see what anyone would complain about. Add in the stuff yuo can’t see in a screenshot and what i know from Insomniac and Resistance 1 and this game is going to rock hard.

As for the Xbox 360 fanlads… LMAO, sorry but good luck… at least ya know the PS3 will still be thee when MS closes up shop on the 360 prematurely

      @Everyone (except CG)

I really have no idea how much of PS3’s power it uses, I don’t think they’ve disclosed that.

To answer your other Q: I’d go with Killzone 2 myself. But then again, I’m a graphics whore :) Though I’ll play them all no doubt.

Hahaha, superior prick buja, nice, very clever, as a matter of fact I do have a superior prick and an N4G account, thanks for noticing both, only a fag like yourself would notice another man’s bulge, but thats cool if you swing that way buddy, I must say I am flattered, but your mom and I are already “special friends” and I prefer women. LOL. Tell your mom I’ll be over a bit late tonight so don’t wait up ok son.

Dan, what can I say about you that your parents didn’t tell you everyday of your miserable life,I will say this, sorry your scary uncle visits you at night to play hide the toblerone, ROFL, perhaps if you moved out of your parents basement you wouldn’t have to hear their criticism and you would be out of the reach of your uncle.

Tag team me and still failed Buja and Dan, I’m a one man word army. Sad. At least I know my comments got to you so it means I did my job. Night everyone, sorry to disturb your fanboy lovein, not even on N4G do you get accosted by internet thugs for asking logical questions, haha. Next time when you send your minions after me make sure they are more clever than a box of rocks. LOL.

After this I am sure Dan and Buja will be quite upset, but it’s usually the ones that are not too smart that get involved in things that don’t concern them. Though Rain seemed cool as a person, it heartens me to see that most people saw your post as the illogical GARBAGE it was.

To Buja suck my superior prick you ass munching fudge packer ,ROFL, that one was special for you man, hope you like it, and we all know you do ;).
And to Dan, sorry about your family situation, it is nothing to tolerate, I wish you luck confronting your scary uncle and your anal obsession with a certified mental expert. LOL.

All this and not one logical response to valid questions about Rain’s methods, I submit that this blind and blatant dismissal of facts is the epitome of what a fanboy is, funny thing is we are all fans of Resistance and PS3 from your post but you two are dumb as bricks. This is the most fun I have had in a long time thoroughly emasculating a duo like this, but I have to say that I am thoroughly disappointed in the quality and intensity of the insults you threw my way, I would have expected much more.

I know I know, you don’t care and you didn’t read my response etc. etc. etc., whatever it takes to save face, I know you are pissed after reading this but it’s a good lesson to you both, mind your business when things don’t concern you. Rain and I would have squashed the issue and you two would have your dignity. Everyone makes mistakes, just be glad that you did this over the internet because words hurt but a broken jaw must hurt even more.

And @ Dan, I would play Resistance 2 first, Insomniac is a killer dev. Haze and KZ2 still have a lot to prove though I loved Timesplitters and Liberation. Hahahahaha.
