Obsidian is no stranger to RPG-dom. Having worked on the follow-up to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR 2, pictured), as well as the sequel to PC megahit Neverwinter Nights, Obsidian knows how to craft an RPG epic. They have confirmed that they are, in fact, working on an Aliens-licensed RPG for Sega, but it seems they are also working on an original spy-themed RPG, codenamed Alpha Protocol.
Eurogamer.net, via a neogaf poster, reports that the latest Game Informer details Obsidian’s secret spy/thriller RPG. Alpha Protocol is in development for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC and is projected for a spring 2009 release. Similar to Mass Effect in gameplay, Alpha Protocol blends real-time and strategy-based combat and puts you in the silk suit of a superspy, or the grey-hoodie of a Jack Bauer-type. You’ll have a world of intrigue and espionage to play around in, with skills to gain and gadgets to tinker with, naturally. You’ll travel all over the world, taking missions at your leisure. And like Mass Effect, romance will play a role. No doubt your debonair sleuth will meet many women and seduce a fair share too, in classic Connery fashion.
Obsidian has been quiet lately, and we haven’t heard much about their Aliens RPG, either. Since Gearbox is starting to talk about their Aliens game, maybe Obsidian will follow suit. They’ve done great work in the past and their latest titles look to raise the bar.
