Holy @#$! Capcom’s new 2D side scroller shocks…

You wouldn’t be alone if you’ve overlooked the previous announcements in the last month and a half about this game….

Let’s get one thing clear right now, I haven’t seen a 2D side scrolling game that has looked this amazing gameplay and graphics wise in many years. I’m talking about Bionic Commando: Rearmed, a CAPCOM remake of the original Bionic Commando, an innovative, best-selling game of its time for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). For those interested in counting, that happened to be almost 20 years ago, amazing if you think about the fact that it is now returning. All can rejoice because it will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and even the PC.

I happened to stumble onto this trailer (embedded after the break) today just out of curiosity, not knowing what to expect. Noticing it was a remake, what I expected more than anything was to see some really old, bland 8-bit graphics from the original. Instead, my jaw dropped. I must have said “wow” three times during the course of the trailer, and I rarely say that when I see trailers for a lot of supposed AAA future release games sporting fancy 3D graphics.

If you’re at least slightly curious, you must go check out the trailer now! Screenshots do not do this game justice, you must see it in motion. It will make you wonder why the games like this couldn’t have looked this cool when you were a kid playing on your NES.

The icing on the cake is that this truly looks like a remake and not just a rehash. It sports a very impressive feature list (full list below), including 2 player coop and lots of cool new weapons never seen in the original game. If you’re like me and never played the original Bionic Commando long ago, you probably at least remember how fun some other games were that this elicits, such as original Shinobi, Castlevania, or Contra. The gameplay is described as an intense 2D side scroller that features elements of shooting, platforming, and a fairly unique grappling arm that is used to grab onto just about anything.

Bionic Commando Rearmed will contain the following features

  • Classic Bionic Commando gameplay focused around the use of the bionic grappling arm
  • 2-player co-op mode
  • Total modern visual revamp, including dynamic shadows, particle effects and environmental damage
  • Reworking of musical score
  • Cross-game interoperability – complete specific parts of Bionic Commando Rearmed to unlock new content and hints for the Bionic Commando sequel
  • In-game art designed by one of Capcom’s most talented artists, Toshiaki Mori
