Mama cooking up a storm in YO! Sushi
BY Thom Dinsdale Apr. 10th, 2008 More on:

For perhaps the first time in history the worlds of catering and videogames collided in an intriguing and delicious announcement from 505 Games and Japanese restaurant chain YO! Shushi.

Starting April 14th a number of YO! Shushi restaurants will have Nintendo DS consoles with preloaded versions of Cooking Mama 2, sequel to the original ultra-fun cooking sim, for diners to play throughout the duration of their meal.

My Ly, of YO! Sushi commented, “As well as offering delicious and healthy Japanese inspired dishes, we are always looking to provide something extra for our customers - and this is a perfect way in adding value to their dining experience. We are delighted to be working with Cooking Mama on this exciting and innovative promotion.”

As part of the campaign 505 Games will also be giving customers the chance to win Nintendo DS and Wii consoles and copies of Cooking Mama 2.

This match made in heaven is showing that videogames are really beginning to tear down the traditional barriers of the medium and integrate themselves in fun and innovative ways. Some may remark that it is slightly dissasociative for diners to be burying their heads in handhelds when they should be socialising and chatting, but I couldn’t care less about that. This is truly innovative and I think it’s wonderful that developers are trying to find their products’ relevance to the world at large.

For those of you in London, Cooking Mama 2 is available to play for free in the Poland Street and Farringdon Road YO! Sushi restaurants from Monday 14th April.

I remember being at a talk from the founder of Yo Sushi, he is a bit crazy and has no reserves about trying out new ideas. Great guy who will try out anything once. This sounds quite fun, and connected to what they are doing, nice to see how it turns out.
