Just like Virginia, the Dreamcast is for lovers. Lovers of sharp, classic fighting games, that is. SEGA’s little alabaster box was a mecca for beautiful battling early in the decade, giving us such gems as Capcom vs. SNK, Marvel vs. Capcom, Guilty Gear X and, of course, the mighty Soulcalibur, what many consider one of the greatest games of all time.
But now that the Dreamcast has been pitched into the rubbish bin with all the Betamax players and 8-track tapes, it’s incredibly difficult to replay and relive quality fighters like Soulcalibur. Tracking down SEGA’s system, the necessary accessories and the game itself is an Ebay chore for the ages.
Don’t panic, though. If you recoiled in horror over Soulcalibur IV’s lightsaber surprise, soon you’ll be able to wax nostalgic, punching undead pirates and blind knife fetishists like it’s 1999! NAMCO BANDAI announced today that the original Soulcalibur will hit Xbox LIVE Arcade this summer. Very little detail has been revealed, but we do know the following:
- The original cast returns, so expect a resurgence of risqué Ivy Valentine fan art!
- High definition graphics will BLOW YOUR MIND.
- Arcade, Training and Survival modes will all make an appearance, but the only multiplayer announced thus far is local Versus. Here’s hoping for truly online skirmishes by the title’s release.
- Finally, leaderboards for every character and mode will help you better criticize your friend’s parrying skills.
This should make up for Soulcalibur Legends quite nicely. More details as they become available.

I just popped this int eh other night on my DC and my mind was slightly exploded (only the left front part) by the still impressive graphics so the HI-Def ones are gonna be sweet….though I’m still not buying it. Why would I want to take away a reason to turn my Dreamcast on?

There’s never been a reason in recorded history to turn a Dreamcast OFF.
