Excuse me while I wipe that drop of saliva dangling from my mouth. The folks down at Digi-Guys have released the first teaser trailer of 2008 for their fantasy visuals-binge, WarDevil: Unleash The Beast Within. This beautiful and haunting video gives us a first brief glimpse into their lonely and savage game world.
Despite being utterly gorgeous this is one of the most intriguing teasers I’ve seen for a long while. Normally acting as ultra condensed trailers, teasers give a little whilst at the same time giving nothing. Something like a character name, premise, location, the protagonist’s motivation (think early Haze trailers), enough to get people worked up.
This teaser on the other hand does nothing like that, it almost seems to not care whether it excites you or not. It’s slow paced, not full of huge leaps or cuts or quick one-liners; it isn’t the whole game condensed into a minute and a half. It feels like Digi-Guys wanted to capture the essence and the mood of the world they have created i.e. cold and savage and let that, along with the visuals, sell it.
Using a fast paced trailer with quick imagery or one-liners would instantly set the game up alongside God of War and the like, big men with big swords dismembering bigger monsters. However, watching those little lizard rats bark at a skinny warrior while he mercy kills (rather than battles) his enemy is a very intriguing image and something that is defiantly going to make people look twice and keep their eyes open for the next teaser.
This video is marked as the first teaser of 2008 so hopefully we won’t have long to wait before we see some more of this game, and with E3 just around the corner we’re hoping Digi-Guys make an appearance.
