Review / echochrome (PS3)
BY Mike Wehner May. 5th, 2008 More on:

Get lost

echochrome does practically everything right, and nothing wrong. It doesn’t try to be something it isn’t, which I really do admire in a game. The title presents itself in such a way that it gives the player no choice but to be completely drawn into the experience. It’s amazingly easy to lose yourself in the gameplay and snap out of it a couple hours later, only to realize you’ve missed your favorite TV show (Deadliest Catch, anyone?).

echochrome carries a $10 price tag at PLAYSTATION Store, and it might just be the best value on the service at the moment. As mentioned before, the experience is 56 levels long, but it also comes with a level editor that is sure to keep your mind bending for months or years to come. This is the easiest two thumbs up I’ve ever given a downloadable game. Get it. Now.

+

  • All the inventiveness of a game like Portal, for a fraction of the cost
  • Mind-bending puzzles that are fun and difficult, without being discouraging
  • It’s so fresh, they should sell it at Subway

-

  • The US version has 56 levels, which is 44 levels short of the original 100-level Japanese release
  • Might make you feel dumb
  • It’ll probably give you a headache on more than one occasion

I’ve played the demo. The only issue I have with it is that me and the game often disagreed as to what consituted a change in perspective. Especially when you get to jumping about.

Tried the demo recently as well and found it to be a breath of fresh air. Not sure if it’s a buy for me yet, but it’s definitely nice to see games like this pop up every now and then.

Played the demo and I thought it was a great concept for a puzzler. Glad to hear the full game fulfills the potential.
