I’d hate to be the bearer of bad news on an otherwise wonderful day, but I’m afraid I must. Myself as well as a ton of others have been drooling at the mouth while watching some gameplay footage for the upcoming PROTOTYPE. The thought of absorbing people and leaping from rooftop to rooftop only makes the game that much more desirable. Unfortunately, we’ll have to find solace in another title, as this one has been delayed from its original Fall release until Spring of next year at the least.
A spokesperson over at Sierra Entertainment breaks the news, “Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment have made the decision to shift Prototype to launch in 2009,” they continue, “Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create.”
The story takes place in New York, and as stated above, we’re dealing with an open-world game. After seeing the recreation of NYC that GTA 4 offers, I’d say PROTOTYPE has some big shoes to fill. Good news may come in the form that Sierra wants to release the best possible version of the game as they can, and who knows, they may even find a way to re-include the multiplayer component now that they have some extra time, although that’s just the optimist in me talking.
As for the previously announced PROTOTYPE comic, it may still come out in August. It would have been nice to release the comic and game side by side, but that’s the nature of the beast.
