Konami starts the Rock Revolution
BY Jeremy HillMay 15th, 2008 More on:

What do you get when you cross Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and a company that wants to prove they originated music rhythm games? You get Rock Revolution, the latest musical brain child from Konami, that’s what. The game was showed off at Konami’s Gamer’s Night 2008 and promises to be “the most innovative and realistic rock game to hit the market, that will provide a quality drum peripheral and music that players will appreciate,” according to Anthony Crouts, Konami’s Vice President of Marketing.

So what makes this title stand out from the already established Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises? Konami is banking on Rock Revolution’s drums. The drum kit is said to have six drum pads plus a pedal in addition to the now standard lead guitar and bass instruments.

Rock Revolution will be released in the fall for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and DS. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will come with 40 songs, online cooperative and versus modes, and a ‘record your own song’ option. The Wii version will give air guitar a new name with the Wii remote and Nunchuk playing a key role, and DS players will be able to record their own vocals. Can Rock Revolution live up to its competitors? Thoughts please.

The song selection seemed a bit weak to me. But about it becoming a success, surely there’s room in the market for more than two popular music franchises? If they add something new and unique and produce a quality game overall, I don’t think they’ll have trouble finding an audience.

It’ll be interesting to see how Konami goes about trying to differentiating this from Rock Band/Guitar Hero. Sure they have a strong heritage in the genre, but for now it’s coming across as a ‘me too’ product.

Aw c’mon, we’re gonna start to need dedicated rhythm game rooms to store all these instruments, especially the drums. If GH4 brings drums to the game, plus Rock Band, now this. Plus something in the area of roughly 6 guitars, and thats just counting if you’ve only bought them for the aforementioned. I hope there’s some interoperability between the peripherals.

That previous rant aside, the vid doesn’t give me much to get excited about. The songs were sameish and the presentation was a bit bland. Hope they bring more than this, tho a 6 drum set does sound intriguing for the masochistic drummers out there (like myself).

Seriously though, I lost fail in Konami ever since they let the ORIGINAL guitar series (Guitar Freaks) a slow, horrible death.
