Get ready to sit back and relax a while when you’re playing MGS4. Maybe make some popcorn, grab a soda and dim the lights to get a true cinema feeling because you’re going to be watching what basically amount to full movies (that’s right plural) during MGS4‘s cut-scenes. CVG is reporting that MGS4 has multiple cut-scenes that push and even break the 90 minute barrier. They got the news from PSW magazine which says, “MGS4’s story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc.” Thankfully this time around the scenes can be skipped and paused, a much needed improvement over previous Metal Gear games.
As someone who has watched all three Lord of the Rings extended editions back to back I have a high tolerance for long, verbose cinema, but I’m not sure I want it in my videogame. Isn’t the point to be interactive with the game not just a passive observer? But Metal Gear games have always had long cut-scenes and still featured some of the best gameplay around so I don’t suppose it will be any different here. I’m not looking forward to having to leave my PS3 (if I actually buy one) on all day at work because I got stuck halfway through an exorbantly long cut-scene after just wanting to play a bit of the game in the morning. Talk about environmentally unfriendly practices.
