New Oddworld title a distant reality

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? We’ll go with the good news; it seems that a brand spanking new Oddworld game is in the works and has been for some time now. For those of you who never got a chance to play the original title, or any of its many sequels, the series originated as a 2D platformer on the PS1 and spawned a sequel on that console as well. Various other incarnations have appeared over the years with the latest being Stranger’s Wrath on the Xbox. The series has always featured vibrant visuals and a unique sense of humor that comes off as genuinely funny instead of forced.

According to Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun, the new title will feature a one-of-a-kind 3D animation engine that will bring the level of visual quality up to that of a Pixar movie. Braun explains, “The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects,” he continues “The tools are finally getting to the level where we can come out with a show and we can come up with a game.”

That sounds like some pretty promising info, but what about that bad news I was talking about? It seems that if you were getting all hot and bothered with the above info you should probably grab a cold shower because the game may not ship for “years”. No word yet on what system the game is slated to arrive on, but that decision might be more tricky than it seems. Hypothetically, if the game releases three years from now in 2011, the PS3 and Xbox 360 may already be on their way to their 6th and 7th birthdays respectively. That’s a mighty long time to wait, so lets keep our fingers crossed that “years” is the worst case scenario. We’ll keep you updated on any other tidbits that emerge from the land of the odd.
