It’s that time again, this week’s all format sales charts for the UK are out and, well there’s nothing that surprising in there to be honest. The two games at the top are both new entries, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Battlefield: Bad Company, walking home with 1st and 2nds respectively. Both have been quite hotly anticipated so it should come as no great surprise that they’ve done so well, Super Smash Bros. Brawl especially as the game has seen huge success everywhere else in the world.
The chart makes for disappointing read for those fans of Metal Gear Solid as the series’ latest installment slipped down to 6th, from an applaudable 2nd last week. This week has also seen gamers ask the question “Grand Theft What?” as GTA 4 clings on to tenth by the skin of its teeth. The inability of these games to sustain long term success at the top of the charts does raise some questions as to how many new people these games are bringing onto current-gen hardware. Rather than them burning out in the first couple of weeks with the already established fans before reducing their sales flow to a trickle.
This week also saw my personal little sales hero, Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games battling away in 11th. This game has simply refused to let go (from 6th last week) after over seven months on store shelves.
