VC and WiiWare releases for the week of 7/7/08

Clearly Nintendo has not listened to much Three Dog Night. If they had, they would have known that One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do and that two, well, two can be just as bad as one. In fact it’s the loneliest number since the number one. Yet once again Nintendo gives us only two games this week: SPOGS Racing (D2C Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points) for WiiWare and KING OF THE MONSTERS (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points) for the VC. That’s one (the loneliest number) game for each, making a total of two games, which we have already established is the loneliest number since the number one!

All right, enough of my random referencing of songs from 1969 that most of you young whipper snappers don’t even understand. At least one of these oh-so-lonely games doesn’t look half bad. SPOGS Racing puts you into some strange customizable tire vehicles and lets you compete in some classic arcade races. You can upgrade and change your vehicle’s mechanics on the fly by picking up items during the race, or knocking them away from your opponent. Throw in some multiplayer and you might have a game that’s worth downloading.

On the VC side of things, we get yet another NEOGEO fighter in the form of KING OF MONSTERS. This is basically a 2D version of the modern Godzilla games that have come out, and while I am a massive fan of all things Rampage, I could never get into KING OF MONSTERS. The control were a bit to simple and it seemed to rely too heavily on its city destroying monsters gimmick to really promote any serious gameplay. Plus this makes how many weeks in a row with a “classic” NEOGEO fighter being released? Snore.

Games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time, which is in, like, two minutes…
