FFXIII/Versus XIII exclusivity clarified

Square Enix rocked the gaming world this morning with the bombshell announcement that the Xbox 360 would be receiving Final Fantasy XIII just like the PS3.  So when all the gaming media saw the trailer above at Microsoft’s E3 press event, it was assumed that Xbox 360 would receive FFXIII as a multi-platform release, just like any other.  However, it’s not as simple as all that.  Let us explain…

Like any Final Fantasy title, FFXIII is going to be released in Japan months before anywhere else.  It’s initial release will be a PS3, Japanese-only version.  In the months following the initial release, the game will be localized for the US and Europe and will be optimized for the Xbox 360’s hardware.  When it’s finally ready to be given to the rest of the world it will be released to the US and Europe as a Xbox 360 and PS3 title.  That means that FFXIII will be a PS3 exclusive… in Japan, at least.

The other question that many gamers had was how Final Fantasy Versus XIII would fare in this new gaming landscape.  Well, according to Square, Versus XIII is still a PS3 exclusive.  If you’re not familiar with the Versus XIII denotation of the Final Fantasy title, it refers to a completely separate game that takes place within the FFXIII universe just like the main game.  Versus XIII is not an expansion in any way and it presents its own self-contained story complete with its own combat systems and visual style, much like the differences between FFX and FFX-2.  If you have any other questions, you can present them in written form below…
