VC and WiiWare releases for the week of July 21
BY Matthew RazakJuly 22nd, 2008 More on:

Having been at E3 last week we sort of missed the ol’ releases, but we’re back in action now and so is Nintendo. Literally. The three games coming out this week are all shooters: Pirates: The Key of Dreams (Oxygen Games, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Violence, 1,000 Wii Points), Super Fantasy Zone (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 900 Wii Points), and Gley Lancer (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Mild Suggestive Themes, Mild Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points). Basically, you can choose between shooting with a pirate ship, shooting with a brightly colored ship or shooting with a futuristic spaceship. I know it’s tough to decide, but these are decisions that must be made in life.

Pirates actually looks like a nice little divergence from the standard space faring shooter and offers up a decent amount of levels at a good price. Plus, with multiplayer thrown in, it instantly wins out over the two VC releases in my book, despite the fact that I’ve never played it. It also sounds like the game could get pretty deep with rescued crew members bolstering player’s ship’s stats and abilities, and a plethora of crazy sounding weapons like saw blades and flamethrowers.

Super Fantasy Zone is the last in the Fantasy Zone series and thus is also the death song of shoot-em-ups with bright colors and blatantly pink backgrounds. A moment of silence please. If you already downloaded the original Fantasy Zone you pretty much know what to expect. And no, despite the fact that the word super is in the title, this did not come out for the SNES but the Genesis.

If Gley Lancer looked any more generic I would start accusing the game designers of stealing from other games, but I hear it’s actually a decent shooter and thus should not be discarded so quickly. I only played it briefly, I think, so taking my word on it is not going to do you any good. Look inside yourself and decide if you love spaceships, shooting and large bosses enough to download the game. Let us know what you pick.
