Nintendo thinking of the future
BY Se AjalaJuly 30th, 2008 More on:

Nintendo isn’t resting on their laurels and spending too much time patting themselves with the success that the Wii has achieved for them this generation it appears. While speaking to Forbes, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the company is thinking ahead and is working on their next system, “We are always preparing for the next hardware. We are under development. … But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games.”

The Wii has raised the bar in terms of what the general public will be expecting from Nintendo in the future, and when pressed on what we could expect out of the next system, Iwata tried to lower expectations: “It’s natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different. If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it’s going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.”

With the Wii selling so well, and the new peripherals, it’s easy to see the system having a 5+ year lifespan.

Yeah I wouldn’t expect a new system from Ninty for at least another 4-5 years giving the Wii about 7+ year life span.

Yeah I wouldn’t expect a new system from Ninty for at least another 4-5 years giving the Wii about 7+ year life span. I have no clue what to expect from them in terms of their next system. It’s going to be hard for them to top the success, interest and level of sustained excitement that the Wii has.

But somehow I think they’ll be okay.
