Crytek: Xbox 720 and PS4 by 2012
BY Mike Wehner Aug. 20th, 2008 More on:

Speaking at this year’s GC developers conference, Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli expressed his opinions regarding the next generation of home consoles. While giving a talk titled “The Future of Gaming Graphics”, Yerli shared his opinion regarding dates when we can expect to see the eighth home console generation.

“The PlayStation 4 and Xbox ‘720′ will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think,” Yerli said. “But this is just our estimate…we don’t know, and even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn’t say because it would be under NDA. But we think in three to four years’ time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already…but we’ll see.”

These estimates are, of course, coming from the head of a developer who creates some of the most taxing PC titles ever to grace retail shelves, and like seen from the quote, are simply guesses. So don’t go marking your calendars quite yet. Either way, everyone should already know that the world will be ending in 2012 anyway, so I really don’t see the point…

I sincerely hope that the next gen of consoles doesn’t come out in 2011 or 2012. I think they’re beginning to come out too soon within each other. I haven’t long had my PS3 and only got my Wii 1 1/2 years ago.
I would have thought this current gen will last longer because they can do so much more with software/firmware updates now. oh well…

As much as these systems cost Sony and Microsoft to make, there’s no way they’re jumping in for the next round so soon. They’re still trying to recoup their losses. Not only that, but they haven’t even had a chance to release several of their staple titles yet (like Gran Turismo for PS3). I’d expect more like 2015 if anything based on these reasons plus the time between previous generations.

It’d probably be in everyone’s best interest until they wait until ray tracing technology is fully realized before they release the next gen systems.
