Wii gaming on a budget

2009 looks set to be a great year for Wii gamers with titles like The Conduit and MadWorld scheduled for release, but there’s been no better time to try out those games you may have missed the first time around because you were too busy Brawling and Galaxy-hopping to care. Even better, many of these games are now available for bargain prices, sometimes as low as $10! Is there anything more satisfying than getting a great game at a great price?

Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy

bwA 2D shooter with a twist, the enemies you destroy can be fused to your ship and used as shields and weapons. This means that rather than memorizing endless patterns of enemy ships and bullets, gameplay is refreshingly strategic and twitch-based. Additionally, the game also includes a surprisingly deep editor which allows you to create your own ships and vehicles and upload them to a central site. As well as allowing others to download your own creations, gamers can take their pick of the uploads of other gamers. The only downside is the editor is a little complex and time consuming to learn.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies

gwAnother bargain 2D shooter, this game was criminally ignored when it was released at $40, but shouldn’t be now that it’s widely available for $20. Featuring some fantastic level design and a 2D wireframe aesthetic that’s borderline hypnotic, Geometry Wars will have you straining to get your name on those online leaderboards for hours. The only possible issue is that if you have trouble with the IR pointer for the controls, you may have to shell out an extra $20 for the classic controller if you don’t already have one.

I bought Geometry Wars Galaxies when it was released and I have to say I think it’s great. But be warned…it can be incredibly hard, so unless you enjoy the game for its addictiveness, then it can be quite frustrating, especially if you want to get those highscores. Or maybe I’m just no good!

If you can find it, Zak and Wiki is a really good one. Used to be at Toys R Us for only $10.

Don’t forget that the Wii is fully backwards compatible with the Gamecube, so all of those Gamecube titles that you can now pick up for a song (Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Chibi Robo, any of the Legend of Zelda games, Pikimin) are still fair game.

A used Gamecube controller might set you back $24.99 at Gamestop.
