Faking the Band - Sweet charity! [September 2]

Faking the Band is a weekly feature detailing the latest in downloadable content for Rock Band.

We’re all disappointed about the Moving Pictures delay, but we must press ever forward, looking ahead to not only September 14’s Rock Band 2, but a near-endless stream of future downloads. That should be rather easy for gamers. After all, the DLC train shows no sign of stopping now, what with two new batches of tracks available this very moment!

Pinch-hitting for last week’s Rush album is the Locksley Pack, featuring three singles from the titular garage rockers. “All Over Again,” “Don’t Make Me Wait” and “She Does” come from Locksley’s latest album Don’t Make Me Wait and are excellent examples of the band’s style: a poppy sound reminiscent of early British Invasion bands like the Kinks and the Beatles. These tunes are only $1 each until September 29, then they revert to the traditional $2 price, so grab them fast!

Since Harmonix and Rock Band 2 were features at the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo or “PAX,” this week’s content is naturally tied-in. Today’s PAX 2008 Pack showcases the wit and quirk of three acts popular in the so-called “geek culture.” “Still Alive” songwriter Jonathan Coulton returns to Rock Band with “Skullcrusher Mountain,” hip-hop makes its first appearance on the setlist with nerdcore icon MC Frontalot and his “Livin’ on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe,” and virtual unknowns The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets offer the previously unreleased, Lovecraftian “Shhh…”

The PAX 2008 Pack will not only fill your setlist, but your heart, as all sale proceeds between today and this holiday season will be donated to the Penny Arcade-helmed charity Child’s Play. It’s a non-profit dedicated to brightening the lives of hospitalized children with toy drives and donations for funding research and facility improvements. Three fine Rock Band tracks and the chance to cheer up sick kids around the world? What a fantastic deal!

NOTE: Price reverts to 160 / 440 standard on September 29.
