RACE Pro faces delay, but it’s not all bad |

It’s sad to start the week off with news of another delay but hey, these things happen. This time it’s the Xbox 360-exclusive contender for the most realistic racing sim ever to grace a console that is facing a delay of a few months — previously scheduled for a November 2008 release, the Atari-published, SimBin-developed RACE Pro has now been pushed to January 2009 “to ensure the game reaches the highest possible standard of excellence”.
It’s not all bad news though. To soften the blow, Atari also announced that a demo will be available and that it will offer both single- and multiplayer action once it hits Xbox LIVE before the holiday festivities. No exact date for the demo was provided, so I guess that actually makes this a bad news/good news/bad news kind of a situation?

If this is anything like SimBin’s PC racing games, it will be “hot” despite what any screenshots look like. Racing isn’t only about the prettiest graphics. Then again, SimBin’s games haven’t sold all that well compared to mainstream games and the sim market in general is flatlined because consumers want a pretty arcade game not a hardcore sim.

It’s not so much about pretty graphics but believable photo-realistic environments. Say what you want about GT5P , it has a good car modeling (damage to come), a photo-realistic environments and while the gameplay leaves much to be desired, it has achieved (with the help of the G25 steering wheel, the standard wheel for PC sim/racer), a decent physics/handling even when compared to the best SimBin’s fare.

Can’t say much on this game, but I have GT5 Prologue and I think they gameplay is great. It may be too realistic for some people. In either case, the full game will just be a great big bag of Awesome!

I love Gran Turismo as much as the next guy (ok, a lot more than the next guy); I’ve owned every GT since the first one came out and I’ve owned both of the GT steering wheels. I also own SimBin’s games, I also have a VRX racing cockpit setup, I am a real life gearhand that plays with sports cars, and and…I digress. :)
GT is fun, but I feel its physics in many cases leave much to be desired in comparison to say GTR2. I also would like to see GT change their sounds, the cars have sounded exactly the same since like GT2. I will pre-order GT5, but unless they drastically change things (which I doubt they will), it means that the game is likely going to once again recycle the same tired physics and sounds, which are more game than reality.
Regardless of all this, who knows what RACE Pro will be. If they console-ize the previous SimBin style games, then we’ll probably end up with something like GRID, which I feel is a great game that falls somewhere between Gran Turismo and GTR2.
