The other day we spoke a little about the PSN exclusive The Punisher: No Mercy, but all we had to go on was a description and our silly, little imaginations — mine always involve marshmallows. Yesterday the fine folks at Zen Studios pulled the trigger on what the game is all about, as well as what it looks like — see our image gallery here. Gameplay: it has it!
We knew before the title would be a multiplayer, arena FPS but it’s been revealed there will also be a single-player mode where you’ll take on hordes of enemies (bots?) in various modes, allowing you to unlock an “original story.” Along for the kill will be an arsenal of weapons spread across different categories (close quarters, long range and special weapons) which are hinted at becoming more powerful the more you kill or, you know, pick up power-ups. You will also be able to customize your character not only in appearance, but also with special abilities that may give you an edge as long as you don’t get distracted by the ‘splosions and melt your own face off. It happened to me once, but I don’t like to talk about it.
Trophy fans, you’ll get your chance at making n00bs cry while trying to rack up those shiny, “they look good on the mantle” objects with “full support” touted. And for the graphically conscious (whore is such a rough word), a smooth 30 fps is expected, utilizing an improved build of the Unreal Engine 3 that <3s the PlayStation 3.
If you’re thinking this sounds a lot like Unreal Tournament III, I’m right there with you. The “story” mode sounds awfully familiar and it’s tough not to compare a multiplayer, arena FPS with the beast that is the Unreal Tournament series. However, if the final product is close to or as solid as UT3, it could definitely be one to watch out for. Solid gameplay + recognizable license + cheap price = do want? Can you get behind that equation?
