Sonic to go 2D?
BY Antonio Hernandez Oct. 12th, 2008 More on:

Just to be clear, I’m going to be as pessimistic as possible when putting this article together. SEGA has a way of disappointing its fans, and while the concept of a 2D Sonic game is enticing, I must protect my heart from being shattered once more. In an interview with Kotaku, Akinori Nishiyama, producer of Sonic Unleashed, alluded to a possible Sonic 2D release via digital distribution.

When asked if Capcom’s strategy of remaking old titles may influence SEGA’s strategy with Sonic, Nishiyama replied with encouraging words, “One thing we could do is make a game like Mega Man 9; do a new Sonic, but in an old style.”

Let’s not break out the confetti yet though, I mean the possibility of this actually happening is still up in the air. It’s probably just some PR stunt in order to get us excited for Sonic Unleashed. No reason to panic people. Right? It’s not possible, not at all, there would be no way SEGA would do this to me. Everything is going to be…

Ah, who am I kidding? I’ll go get the cake.

Sega still have trouble with some of the fundamentals of 3D worlds. Camera, controls, leaps of faith etc. Not only would a retro game suit them, a return to 2D in general would benefit many of their teams.
And yet I still have high hopes for Unleashed and Black Knight. Foolishly hopeful…
