Dogs, tanks and flamethrowers; welcome to COD: World at War’s multiplayer
BY Matthew RazakOctober 16th, 2008 More on:

There are few console first-person shooters whose multiplayer is as popular as COD4’s. In fact off the top of my head I can only think of two: GoldenEye and Halo. So of course the next game in the series is going to have to have some pretty amazing stuff in it to stand up to its predecessor. In the video above we get to see how Call of Duty: World at War is shaping up in its multiplayer and how Treyarch is working to outshine the last Call of Duty game.

We get a peak at the new levels which look expansive and come in a variety of shapes and colors, though it seems that gray once again dominates. Aren’t we supposed to be in the Pacific for some of this? Isn’t it sunny there? We also see some of the upgrade systems that Treyarch is implementing and rewards players get for playing well. Releasing dogs on an opponent is probably what I’m looking forward to most, despite the flame thrower looking utterly enjoyable. It’ll probably be relatively useless in reality.

What doesn’t look useless is the tank, but I’m glad to see that they’re not just focusing on the power of a tank but also on the ability for opponents to take out said tank. Hopefully the game finds a good balance between tank gameplay and tank destruction so that multiplayer matches don’t become a race for the tank but also don’t allow the rolling cannon to sit in the middle of the battlefield and rust.
