I think we all remember the Super Mario Bros. movie. It was, in a word, awesome. It was, in another word, terrible. It was awesomely terrible. Possibly one of the most awesomely terrible things about it was Dennis Hoppers human version of King Koopa. Why was he human? We may never know, but thanks to Conan O’Brien we now have confirmation on why he took the part.
Speaking with the late night host, Hopper said, after being questioned about which of his films he regrets the most, “I made a picture called Super Mario Bros., and my six-year-old son at the time — he’s now 18 — he said, ‘Dad, I think you’re probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy King Koopa in Super Mario Bros.?’ and I said, ‘Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes,’ and he said, ‘Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly.’”
We’ve learned two things from this. One is that Dennis Hopper clearly does not understand the importance of his performance in that movie and the second is that his six-year-old son was really clever. Anyone surprised that an actor took a job simply for money? I know! The very foundations of Hollywood must be shaking as we speak.

I can’t remember where I heard the interview with Bob Hoskins, who played Mario, and he was talking about how making the movie was a major pain. The directors or something were a husband a wife team and absoluty crap to work with. I still can’t help that I LOVE that movie though.

Dennis Hopper is the man. We must forgive him for making the odd bad movie because the guy is a legend. I even have him on my GPS as a voice I got form Navtones.com.

That movie was an atrocity, but for some damn reason I still like it. I wonder what a well done Mario movie would be like.

Shrek. It would be an animated movie by Dreamworks.
