Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar, has been speaking to Variety about the upcoming GTA IV Xbox 360-exclusive DLC. Seems like that ‘Fall 2008′ release date is going to slip by. Indeed it may not even be out this year. “It’s going well. But we don’t know a date,” said Houser. “We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We’re still figuring out a few things. We’re more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good.”
As for what shape the content may take, Houser is similarly vague. “We want to give people a rough idea so their expectations are roughly in line. We don’t want them to imagine it’s this enormous thing that it can never be.” Looks like that ‘whole new island’ idea is out the window then. Simultaneous worldwide release and price points are still being mulled over.
Along with all this vagueness, Houser has mixed emotions about the content’s development. “Doing a big digital launch is something we’ve never done before. It’s virgin territory, but at the same time, we feel very exposed because there’s no case history. No one ever came out with major DLC for a major game like this before… It’s new territory for everybody. We’re making it up a little bit as we go along. That’s always fun, but it makes you nervous.” Expect more solid details as and when they arrive.

Probably better this way anyway. I imagine people have had enough of GTAIV during the summer, and with all the new releases this year, I don’t think they’d get as many DLC sales as if they’d sell it at the beginning of 09 when not a lot of games come out.

You would imagine that the content will be extra missions. I know the rumour is two 10-hour ‘episodes’. But GTA’s quality doesn’t lie in its missions, it’s in the city and the stories you make within it. I hope they do something that surprises people.
