Blizzard already has the next WoW expansion planned
BY Adam Sandberg Dec. 5th, 2008 More on:

As World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King has been released, knocking down sales records like they were bowling pins, you would think that the guys over at Blizzard would take some time to relax and watch the coins roll in. Wrong, think again. Not only are they likely to work their asses off with StarCraft II and Diablo III, Blizzard’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Sams has recently stated that they have already decided on WoW’s next expansion.

“Well, we don’t have anything to share on that but the development team has a very long forward look, and they don’t know all the specifics elements of the future, but the general framework is in the heads of the production staff, designers and team members,” Sams said in an interview with PCRetail.

“So they do know where it is going to go, but a lot of specifics they determine along the way,” Sams continued. “We have a lot of creative people on the team and they have no shortage of great ideas – it’s a matter of figuring out the right ideas for each content update or expansion that fits the story that we’re trying to tell. Every time I talk to that group the ideas just keep overflowing, so we feel there’s a lot still to do.”

Sams also confirmed (if that’s possible at this moment) that the WoW expansions won’t be coming to an end any time soon.

“You can count on there being further expansions for World of Warcraft. There’s a passionate group of players that play World of Warcraft and we’re going to continue to support that group for as long as there are a meaningful number of people that want to play it.”

Since the number of WoW players seems to increase exponentially, that meaningful amount of players should be safeguarded for quite some time. To be perfectly honest, we can’t see the demand for new expansions to fade in the graspable future. Blizzard have earlier stated that they know that the end is coming and all we can say is that the date for that ending is probably up to them.

Im hoping the next expansion will explore the locked and unexploited empty spaces across the original 2 continents and the various islands that appear disappear and reappear on in game maps.
Wow lost some of its magic post lv 60, the 2 new continants lack the magic of Kalimdor and Eastern kingdoms, please Blizzard take us back to them for more than just trick or treating and nostalgia!
Personally I have an irrational desire to see Hyjal unlocked and made a questing zone. What already exists looks great!

The next expansion will definitely be the Emerald Dream, followed by the Maelstrom. The number of hanging threads left in Northrend and ready to be filled in by the Emerald Dream being numerous, combined with the fact that a new Emerald Dream-related lore book is coming our way (it’s called Stormrage) sets the stage perfectly for what is coming. There just isn’t really a lot of links between current content and the maelstrom to justify an expansion. I mean honestly, there needs to be some pretty major events to occur before Blizzard can set up the Maelstrom expansion. For starters, the thing is still underwater, so how does that work? It’s not like people are going to be doing everything underwater. How the hell would you ever get a drink in or a place to eat?

Once Ulduar comes out (I’m predicting we’ll be killing Yogg’saran (sp?), another old god like C’thun) then Id really like to see Uldum… That place has some cool hooks, like the hole in the gate there.

They’ve also got lots of other content out there too… Namely Tel’Abim, Kirin Tor (w/ Crestfall and Tol Barad), The Broken Isles, Zandalar, Northeron, Argus, Plunder Isle, the home planet of the Ethereals, Gilneas (cool stuff is coming up for this one!), Kezan/Undermine… ETC. Plus they have something along the lines of 10 other cool places to open up in already-opened azeroth, like the Stormwind Vault, 3 unknown zones, Hall of Thanes (Old IF), Tirisfal Grove (empty space in Tirisfal), location behind the stormwind harbour, etc.

BTW those two Islands that disappeared off the coast of STV are Gillijim’s isle (south, small) and the Isle of Doctor Lapidis (north, larger). They existed in the WoW Alpha, but were later removed.

Seriously, the one thing that I want to see class wise is a demon hunter. I have been in love with that character since I first played WC3. Possibly a few other things could possibly be the witch doctor(Very nice class) or possibly the Shadow Hunter.

there are clues for it being either maelstrom of ED.

case for Maelstrom: buffing breathing, underwater mounts being added in 3.1, regular mounts usable underwater. currently there is a lot of underwater love going on, making it easier for us to reach the lower watery reaches of the world.

case for ED: a quest where we get sent to the dream, a few in game references and clues, literiture being published.

also, the ED, as we all know, is Azeroth as it was before human intervention. why have an expansion of the whole land mass, before parts of it are even revealed in non-dream state. i say we will get ED after we have all zones in Azeroth available to us, including the Maelstrom and islands of the south seas. i personally think Maelstrom is a lot stronger a candidate than ED, but that not me saying its gonna be like that, i personally can see hints for both.

Blade master and mountain king although awsome hero classes that could be added should not happen in next Xpac as well as demon hunter. reason being is we just added a new melea/tank class and we need another because…? shadow hunter and witch doctor should be only one class between them as they are pretty much the same thing as well as the shaman, it would be a nice choice though for a new hero class for horde only and alliance who knows. ED will be sick none the less no matter what claases are added with it. just wondering when there will be a wood working job to since all gear is covored in other craftings other then bows, arrows, and staves. wood armor would be kinda cool to see to.

People have to stop suggesting bards/monks/etc. While the game may have stolen some from Dungeons and Dragons. Well, a lot, they will not make a D&D hero class. They already have a roster chock-full of new classes they need to implement. They had hinted at battle-healers and necromancy, though they kinda tied that in with DKs.

Also, there are NO loose ends with WOTLK. Patch 3.1 drops today, and Icecrown isn’t out till 3.3. How can you say there are loose ends when it hasn’t ended?

I thought BC, and WOTLK would be maelstrom. Could be wrong again. Emerald Dream is important, maybe more with the Old Gods, who knows? I love the scourge lore, and at heart I’m still a Vanilla WoW guy. BC sucked, WOTLK maybe redeemed it a bit, but I would love to see Maelstrom or perhaps more with EPL/WPL. Save for DKs, they didn’t implement the old world enough in my opinion. Northrend is where it’s at, and I love the Old World. Beautiful.

Anyways, I hope that, either way it’s good. I believe they have also suggested there are only 2 more Expansion packs *planned,* up to level 100. The programming can go higher, but they have promised to kill WoW. They have a new MMO that has nothing to do with their previous IPs planned.

      Signing off, have fun everyone.

Everyone is always going on about emerald dream…but think about it, who would the main boss be? WoW is all based on story from the three previous warcraft games, and im not a WC genius or anything, but theres nothing that says the Emerald Dream has a killer boss like Illidan or the Lich King. The Maelstrom on the other hand, boss could be Gul’dan…is that how you spell it?

i reckon the maelstrom will definitly be next. theyve got everything there they just need to implement it. and never mind about all this breathing under water, the naga and crab man cities will probablys be in an air bubble and youll have to swim to get to it. but i think thats the only swimming youl really have to do. everything else in the south sea is above land. its soo great. there are soo many islands.. theyve got loads of intances as well. tomb of seargeras ( i dont know how to spell it), the naga city nazjatar( last boss queen azshara), the makrura city makaru, Gishan caverns ( naga are scared of this place because of the enormours sea creatures, the rift ( with another old god for a boss). etc. then there are loads of questing areas around the maelstrom and ofcourse the neutral goblin city of undermine. its perfect.. whilst implementing uldum and another c.o.t instance, the great sundering : the well of eternity’s destruction…. enabling flying mounts to get to each island, and water mounts to get to the naga and makraru city. an ofcourse bilgwater port to get to and from booty bay, ratchet, stormwind harbour etc.

Crawdaddy I officially love you. I have been talking about woodworking for 2 years. We can make bullets, guns, swords, axes, but not staves, arrows, or any of that stuff. I say wood armor should only be allowed to Druids, Shaman, and witch doctor if they add that class since it fits their “nature” type feel.

You stole my idea lol. Anyways I have been complaining about not having woodworking and had hoped it would be added in WOTLK. Maybe they will add it in the next big patch or hopefully in the next expansion..who knows?

The WoW lore has kinda gotten screwed up with Burning Crusade. This totally took the lore out of warcraft, its about magic and killing old gods, etc. Now with BC and WotLK theres helicopters, motorsycles, and all sorts of technoligy. I thin this kind of ruins WoW.

My hope is that they’ll start a WoW 2 or something, and which they will make a higher end game, with options of being many classes and races, humans, dwarves, night elves, (all the old world stuff) but allow you to be all of the other races in the game (like goblins, naga, tuskar, etc). Give the ability to make every race be able to be any class, so there will be lots of opportunity. Also, improve the graphics and make improve the gameplay, etc, just upgrade it.

it would be great if in the next expansion blizzard creates a guild hall or something, a sort of instance that the guild leader could pay some g to gain acess to the same as with the guild vault.
then players in that guild could go to the guy that you get the charter from… ( you know the guild guy ) …and learn the ability to port to this guild hall and in it could be obviously a guild vault, a forge, anvil, and some other useful stuff. ( Mabey a banner on the wall with the guild tabard on it )
Also if the guild leader could control who can enter the hall it would stop it over flowing with noobs who would really have no use for it. Then mabey some chairs a fire and a butler… called chives…
then you can exit a portal to go back to the place you ported from.

if anyone agrees on my idea, and if you know someway to suggest things to blizzard please tell them about this :)

I believe it is going to be maelstrom, I allready tought of that this afternoon, wasnt too sure that there was going to be an expansion about that, tough. I guess the maelstrom can suck u into another dimensions and if the people who played WC3 know, following the storyline, the maelstrom was so powerful that it sucked up all nearby island, wich will prolly appear into a dimension inside the maelstrom. as for the Emerald Dream, how do u want to make a whole Region out of that? I tought blizz threw away the plans to release the Emerald dream as a raid instance a long time ago.

At This Point it can go either way I think woodworking proffesions have been hinted at with the argent tournament daily jack me some lumber,
Emerald Dream-Basically wow if it was uncultivated and untouched by humans, the giant pangea that was there b4 the sundering
Maelstrom-Has Kezan/Undermine being the new city, Azshara would be a boss as well as Neptulon *(water lieutenant/ water ragnaros) Uldum, Caverns of Time: The Sundering, Maybe a Tomb of Sargeras with the ghost of gul’dan as a boss.
IMO even though the Maelstrom has much more Cold hard evidence, blizz has been hinting at emerald dream content. Also With Pandaren, They Will never be implemented They are an April Fools joke gone wrong, instead of saying WTF people said cool, so chris metzen wrote some lore and such and made it happen, even if they are a real part of wow lore it will never happen because in china theres some shit about no images of killing pandas and such and China Is a huge portion of the 11.5 million people that play.
as with hero classes i think demon hunter would fit emerald dream and witch doctor would fit maelstrom, i think that there should be more Race-Class options tho like
Orcs-Druid(having returned to shamanism they’ve gotten in tune with nature with the help of the tauren)
Troll-Warlock(looking for a way to sate their lust for voodoo)
Tauren-Priest(found out the healing powers of the light and such)
Undead-Hunter(Nathanos Blightcaller, Human Dead ranger lord enough said)
      Blood Elf-Warrior(they just need it)

Human-Hunter(Nathanos Blightcaller when he was alive, enough said)
Dwarf-Mage(Dwarves have begun learning the art of magic in return for sharing the light with gnomes)
Gnome-Priest(learned from Dwarves about the light in return for arcane schooling)
Night Elf-Paladin(Interested in the healing powers of the holy light, They are already priests)
or Night Elf-Shaman(they have a link to nature)
Draenei-Druid(broken and draenei alike have become tuned with nature since meeting the night elves)

also i think we need sub races, just a minor aesthetic change on the character selection screen with new mounts like if you were an orc you could get a wolf but need to be exalted with orgrimmar to buy a talbuk from a mag’har mount vendor and vice-versa
      Orc-Mag’har
      Troll-Forest troll(primal torntusk)
      Tauren-Taunka
Undead-Skeleton or undead w/o bones showing
      Blood elf-Redeemed wretched?

Humans-High Elves(they do take refuge in human cities)
      Dwarf-Frostborn (Muradin bronzebeard enough said)
      Gnomes-Mechagnomes?(Discovered their brethren in ulduar)
      Night Elf-??
      Draenei-Broken(Nobundo enough said)

      New possible races
Goblin for horde, the entire race of goblins wouldnt leave but a certain trade prince could
      they’d Ride turtles

Furbolg for the Alliance, makes sense they have alliance NPC’s already

You guys realize that most of the current WoW classes are based off the abilities and mechanics of those “heroic classes” presented in WC3 right? I mean blade master and mountain king became warrior, paladin stayed the same, many different abilities and features brought together the rogue class, warlock has been there since day one, hunter was introduced in the side campaign in the WC3 expansion and that basically set up WoW itself, priest was also a mix of things, shaman has been there for a while as well along with mages and druids. The Death Knight class was the ideal choice for a heroic class because it used elements that weren’t apart of any other class and didn’t fit in the either Classic or BC. When you look at character like Illidan he had evasion, immolation, demon form, etc. Blade master had the ability to make mirror images which I believe currently mages can do. Warriors got many if not all the melee abilities from mountain lord, blade master, and the abilities Cairne had in the campaign (I cant think of his class name of the top of my head), and lets not forget the ability to bubble, which has been pissing off the enemies of Paladins since day one. I think Blizzard is going to come out with brand new stuff for heroic classes that may be very similar to the older classes yet branch off into a new direction just like the Death Knight class did.

As for the upcoming expansion I wouldn’t be surprised to see ED come out next. There is a lot of footage of people “entering the emerald dream” on youtube and even concept art floating around, etc. And while WoTLK seems like the dramatic climax of WoW it seems like Blizzard has been hinting very heavily at ED since our first runs through Wailing Caverns or even before that. And with the constant Rare Spawn dragons and the different portals located all around the world, its almost like stumbling across the Dark Gate in classic or wondering what the hell was up with Uldaman and later find out it was apart of the whole Titan theme. Not to mention the constant worrying of all NPC Druids of the Emerald Nightmare and the great evil that lies there. (An example being those elite flower things that pop out in the room in Moonglade)

While Maelstrom may be an interesting setting, I think Blizz may save that for a later time, if they do it at all. Sure they would have a hell of a story line, along with an interesting setting change (I mean c’mon, think of the crazy Naga Armor we would all be wearing) But the Dream seems like the next frontier to me. Besides, Sargeras was around before The Shattering as one of the Titans and he is the reason for The Shattering. Which puts Sargeras as a lot stronger than the dragon(I think) that is causing the Emerald Nightmare. Although, Blizzard only introduced the area where Gul’ dan was killed off by Sargeras (the place where most of the Warden campaign takes place) so I wouldnt be surprised if that wound up being a seperate End Game Raid sort of like Onyxia or Molten Core, and the Emerald Dream could wind up being the area that leads up to it. Either way Blizzard is going to have to give most if not all players a crash course in the history and mythology off that whole situation. We’ve only had a fraction of it introduced to us with the expansions, mainly BC and Wrath, and there is still much of that story to tell.

Mate, Blizz has already planned future expansion list, check your Apha or Beta folders (WoW Classic ones they are) there is a .pdf file located there that has a notepad file attached in, it’s all planned… and come on you know the lore as much as i do (less or more, that’s not the deal, we don’t have anything to prove, but i seem to understand that you are as much as attracted to the lore as i do), so you can understand that Emerald Dream is not that a big place, and also changes in the Dream does not affect the real world of Kalimdor, and those changes are only minor changes that are reversed to the old form after a while, also Ysera is not controlling it (we can say that she is the one who got controlled by), she’s just there to ensure that it’s still ongoing… Also -spoiler alert- if you check those files i talked to you about, there is written that Xorothian Plains are coming as a low level zone which is known to be the homeworld of Nathrezim, or Wolvar (we’ll see what we’ll get) also Pandaren is the counter-part of them as it can be seen there aswell :)

got any questions (related about lore, or anything else), contact me by msn; reliquary_of_pain@hotmail.com (yea i know what you think about that name :P)

@ John K -> Mate, warcraft is not stolen from D&D, it was the first form of it, they’re all Metzen’s work, D&D was followed by S&S and then finally WC, do a little search about it and you’ll find the smae conclusions, as they may seem completely different, they’re all one in common, D&D was the start, and WC is the end (as it seems today, well, we can not guess what Chris create afterwards)…

@Mr.X -> Those technology you are talking about is already a part of the lore, Titans of the Pantheon have created the denizens of Kalimdor with understanding of technology and the use of it, allowing them to create new and better one according to their needs, as they can be choppers, helis and various stuff, go play WC2 and see what i mean (spoiler -> Gnomish Submarines)

I think they should add Deathwing at some point. now i dont know how but it would be cool to fight him. also i think they should add grim batol. i mean its a big portion of the wetlands with nothing in it plus its got a lot of history, who knows maybe deathwing could be the raid boss seeing as no one knows where he is. now dont take this to heart im just throwing ideas out there.

I think that it’ll take you to the original Well of Eternity…in the center of Azeroth…where the oceans caved in to create the Maelstrom..and you’ll enter through the cave in Azhara where the Elves came out from the center.

There is one more possibility…. that we venture to the caverns of time and end up getting sent pack in time…say you were a night elf…you would become a elf in center of azeroth or a drenie you would become an eredar and blood elves become high elves and orc the old shamanistic ones of dreinor and the darkspear forest trolls ect. well then we would experience all of the history of azeroth…the high elves founding Quel’Thalas and the scourge ripping through the land of the sunwell and the eredar running from the legion and onto drenor and the orc becoming corrupt by the burning legion and the battle for hyjal and the night elves running from the well of eternity to find themselves on azeroth…ect. i think this would be the most grand, intense, and fasinating expansion for WoW…it would probably cover up to 30 levels and in the end it would bring you and your race through history all the way up to how azeroth today…thats when you would renter regular WoW…i think this woud make a perfect Final expansion of Wow

All of these hero classes people are ranting about do NOT make sense. Every single class, no matter how you look at it, is greatly unique to the other (though some have similar abilities, they did this so raids no longer **required** one specific class). The next hero class will likewise not share any similarity in name so mine as well cross out anything with hunter or mage at the end of it lol. I would love to see the maelstrom become the next expansion, I have always enjoyed questing in places like stv or azshara. The fact is, though, each region needs to be greatly diversified from the other. They have kept this manner in each xpac. I would HATE to see flying mounts in the Maelstrom… despite the fact that this will never happen and they would only feel like they are downgrading so they will have flying mounts ;(. flying mounts murdered and raped world pvp, but they are likely to follow up with more siege vehicle bgs which many people have enjoyed including myself ^_^. I can imagine the lore will be something like the damn nagas and other demonic beings (remnants of the followers of the Legion) are attempting to revive sargeras and that one highborn queen.

      One word: Gnomeregan.
Technology has always been a part of WoW and since it’s only the engneerer, who has existed for ages, that can make these mounts I don’t see anything strange in that.

I know it might not work But a Fel-druid(elf lvl70needed) for the elf to merge a druid and warlock and it should be a elf olny thing if druids went denomic or warlocks went soft and get denomic beast pets to use and you can become them like
      fel-bears ,ghost cats and Feralimp
and travel form and flight for are transform olny
and specs feral Demonology and Destructive balance
and if you master feral you get a special form if you master demonology a special pet
and the embarled dream went corrupt and you have to kill some warlock
and everyone else besides those 2 races should get the new hero classes

it kinda sucks but if it was given more planning it would make sense

I think they already stated at some point that they were being careful about doing another hero class if at all. So there is a chance we won’t see a new class in a while. The rumors are stating that Cataclysm is the name of the new xpac, with a the demon/human things as a new race.

the rumors are somewhat may be true as Metzen’s joke led the pandaren to be real after all, and yes Blizz have started to work on the new exp. pack already, and also yes Legionar is the last, and there is 5 expansion packs, but there will not be one for Emerald Dream by itself, i mean we can’t do permanent changes in ED, nor can we affect the living world of Kalimdor (or Azeroth w/e you call it, i coose the old name) also ED is nearly complete and already injected to the ongoing content that we are on (i mean you can get there in live servers resulting in perma. ip+name ban, some people tend to hack through or get up a private server to show it to people), also yes the new expansion has 2 new races, wolvar or nathrezim (not much known about wolvar, so i can’t say much about them, but we know that Xoroth is the homeworld of Nathrezim and their Dreadsteeds, and i’m telling this as i’ve seen that Xorothian Plains are planned to be 10-20 lvling zone…) and probably the other as Pandaren (Blizz would have problem with Chinese Goverment tho, seen what they have done to Forsaken skins, i can say that it can be solved easily :D)… if any1 has a question feel free to ask me via msn or e-mail at reliquary_of_pain@hotmail.com (yea i know it is lame, but had to get a blizz acc for beta, thus made something like that -.-)

No, no, no , I know that =P but I guess what i mean is, remember when WoW was released in 2004, when the level cap was only at level 60? Back then there were no choppers, helicopters, vehicles, only animal mounts, I guess what i mean is i saw it as more of a midevil game and I sorta liked it that way, I don’t mean that as the only reason that BC screwed up WoW, its also that you randomly go through a portal and POOF! your in an alien world!

I just don’t like that aspect of it, I love to play WoW it’s lots of fun but there are flaws I’d like to see improved.

Btw I added you on msn I’m Collinbrown5597@hotmail.com

Eheh, Collin (may i call you Collin btw? i’ll do this time xP) there were all that techno-crap at the release, i mean those mechano-striders :P yes, it was really good back in vanilla and because of an idiot (who got fired) who released the content before it was supposed TBC got even more ruined the gamplay… All right that was hard-core stuff before the nerf at BT but still, it wasn’t meant to be released till 2.3… Also yes, i do think that TBC screwed the game-play as it created 2-key players and led to utter demise of some skill-classes, as it turned them into faceroll ones…

Demon Hunters ain’t unique, if you want a demon hunter, go roll a warlock and try to melee… as demon hunter has low possibilities of being implemented like any other hero class you have seen in wc3

its getting old. they just take us to new places over and over. The wow story is DEAD. the war between the horde and alliance needs to be re-kindled, and they should make BIG changes to the already existing enviroment, how about they flood Thousand needles? or make STV get taken over by the trolls? maby some armies can mobolise. they r just throwing dirt on a fire to try and colroll it, but threres to much dirt and the fires going out
