VC and WiiWare releases for the week of Dec. 8

This week’s VC and WiiWare titles are actually quite interesting. Not a promise of great gaming, but overall an intriguing little bunch of games. For the VC we have Bruiser and Scratch (Steel Penny Games, Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points) and Hockey Allstar Shootout (Big Blue Bubble Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points) and for WiiWare Sonic comes blasting back onto the scene with Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points).

Hockey Allstar Shootout seems basically like an add on to Wii Sports. Players use the Wii Remote to take slap shots at goalies in three different modes. For five bucks a hockey expansion to Wii Sports doesn’t sound too bad. Then again the graphics look crappy, you can’t use Miis and there’s no way to make Gretzky’s head bleed so it isn’t really hockey at all. However, Bruiser and Scratch looks all out entertaining in the puzzle game sort of way. It’s got a story about a cat and dog who get sucked into another world and must go on anthropomorphic puzzle solving adventures in order to escape. Sold, sold and sold.

If you’ve read the reviews of Sonic Unleashed you know it might be a step in the right direction, but if you really want your classic Sonic back than downloading some VC titles is a much better way to go. I’ve always liked the original Sonic game better but Sonic 2 is still an amazing game that truly shows what the Sonic Team could do in its prime.
