CNN: PS3 is the new Titanic
BY Evan O'Donnell Dec. 13th, 2008 More on:

“Sony’s PS3 is dying on the shelves.” That’s the first sentence in an article, titled “Sony’s PS3 A Sinking Ship: Sales Plummet,” over at CNNMoney.com. As PS3 owners ourselves, we’re more than a little worried - after all, we know how accurate the major news networks can be when it comes to our favorite hobby.

Kidding aside, the article does cite a thought-provoking statistic: while the Xbox 360 and Wii saw increased sales this November compared to last, PS3 sales actually dropped 19 percent. According to the author, three factors are contributing to the PS3’s iceberg-seeking trajectory:

  • It’s the most expensive console on the market.
  • No one cares about Blu-ray.
  • The PS3 doesn’t have any must-have exclusives.
  • What do you guys think? We offer up our opinions after the break.

Here’s our problem with those three reasons: only one of them is a fact. Yes, $400 is the least you can spend on a new PS3 (cheapassgamers might disagree). Compare that to $200 for an Xbox 360 and $250 for a Wii and you’ve got yourself an indisputable fact.

However, we’re going to take extreme issue with the author’s second and third points. Blu-ray is catching on big time, and I think the first-day sales numbers of The Dark Knight and Iron Man will back me up on that one. As for the third point, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles, and Resistance 2 say “Hi.” Heck, even IGN declared the PS3 the place to go for exclusives in 2008.

It’s obvious that a price cut would help the PS3’s competitive position, but it seems silly at this point to brand the black beauty a sinking ship. After all, Blu-ray is awesome, the exclusives are there (with more on the way), and we haven’t even begun to review emergency procedures (it’s men and old people first, right?).

what do you expect from some dude that knows nothing about gaming. he’s obviously just being a sheep and following the opinions of many other people who like to talk crap about the ps3. yes, i’m talking about you 360 fanboys! because of you, ignorant people like that guy that made that article post crap that they can’t even back up.
btw, the price isn’t that bad. i mean, you’re getting a hell of alot of stuff for $400. its basically your top of the line computer but $500 cheaper. why complain about that? as for the must buy games, are there really any must buy games that require you getting that console? no, not really. i believe that its a collaboration of many games that convinces the person whether or not they want to buy that console.

As I like to tell people who talk of the “not enough exclusives” lingo, how many games can you play possibly play!?! I have Uncharted, Motorstorm, NHL 08+09, Unreal Tournament, GTA:IV, Resistance 1+2, COD4, Metal Gear 4, Little Big Planet, Guitar Hero 3. I would have to think that is more than the average consumer, and 6 of those are PS3 exclusive.

I’d say he probably is a gamer but he was told to write and article and come up with reasons for the lower sales. He’s gotta say something even if they aren’t that true, especially the lack of big exclusives. However, it does show what a major coup FFXIII was for Msoft though. Many people saw that as the PS3’s only major boon.

honestly, the ps3 was the first purchase of my next generation consoles. Followed by the xbox360 later for the simple reasons of exclusives that i didn’t want to miss out on. As it now hits the year and a half mark, my ps3 mainly acts as a blu ray player other than throwing in LBP now and then and my xbox360 is used as my MAIN gaming console.
The ps3’s biggest problem was that it came out 1 year AFTER the competitor. The xbox 360 had a full year’s head start to fine tune things and get their Sh*t together. The ps3 is simply just trying to play catchup; with games, online services, etc. During that year that microsoft released the xbox, people were starting their game library and gaining xbox live friends and simply digging their roots in. Xbox live is unmatched when it comes to online gaming. Chat, party chats, stability, accessibility…and the list goes on.
Now don’t get me wrong, i LOVED my ps2 and actually disliked the original xbox because i felt it didn’t actually improve anything that the ps2 wasn’t already doing. So i really wanted to like the ps3 more… but after picking up an xbox360, and experiencing games with friends, the ps3 is by far inferior. I know that it has the capability to push the graphical element but lets be honest, 95% of games are made for BOTH platforms so the graphics are equal between the two consoles. They’re made to be. Except of course for titles like MSG4 and DRAKES FORTUNE… but those are few and far between and don’t come out frequent enough to affect the console decisions.
None of the consoles were perfect at launch. The xbox had the RROD, the wii lacked any online or HardDrive, and the ps3 lacked EVERYTHING. Each console has taken steps to rectify the situation. The ps3 is trying to take from the 360 with trophies, in game xmb, ingame music, party chat… and the list continues. The 360 just brought in this whole AVATAR thing taken from NINTENDO… and nintendo is trying to improve their online capabilities like the 360. I think ALL of the improvements are necessary and don’t dislike any of them.

WITH THAT SAID, the ps3 isn’t a sinking ship. It’s just been trying to play catchup for a year and a half and is NOW somewhat in a place to compete. The 360 is by far the console of choice for the GAMER while the wii is introducing games to the casual crowd most successfully. Competition is a good thing for the game industry because it forces them to be more innovative and push the boundaries of gaming. So i want the ps3 to do well AND the 360 and it think it’d be a bad thing for everyone if either went under.

From a poster at N4G (with corrected grammar:

Last year Sony sold 8.83 mil PS3 ‘Worldwide’,2.56 mil in US,6.27 mil in ‘Rest of the world’
Last year MS sold 7.3 mil 360 ‘worldwide’,4.62 mil in US,2.68 mil in ‘Rest of the world’

See the difference? 6.27 Vs 2.68.That’s why PS3 outsold 360 last year

      Also for 2008 :
      Q4 FY2007= 2.33
      Q1 FY2007= 0.71[][][]Q1 FY2008 =1.56 <—–850,000 increase ‘Worldwide’
      Q2 FY2007= 1.31[][][]Q2 FY2008 =2.43 <—–1,1120,000 increase ‘Worldwide’
      Q3 FY2007= 4.9 [][][]Q3 FY2008 =???

So if Sony sells as many console as last year(4.9 mil) in Q3 FY2008(this holiday season),the total sales for this year will be 2.33+1.56+2.43+4.9=11.22 mil and add this with the 10.5 mil consoles that were sold as of 31 Dec 2007,the total number of PS3 will be more than 22 mil in 2 years.

Hell even if Sony sells less PS3s this holiday than what it sold last holiday(say 1 mil),they can easily hit 10mil mark for the most expensive console ever,MS has yet to sell this many console in a year.

“However, it does show what a major coup FFXIII was for Msoft though. Many people saw that as the PS3’s only major boon.”

and thats the sad thing, people think that just 1 game can make or break a console. its not true at all. like i stated earlier, its a collaboration of games. someone that buys a 360 just for halo 3 is pretty stupid. they’re gonna limit themselves/be narrow minded enough to not even try other games. they’re just gonna play the one game that everyone seems to talk about and never play anything else.
just throwing this out there, i find it funny how 360 fanboys can only name like 3 games. halo 3, gears 1 and 2. thats all they say. and when a ps3 fanboy tries to combat that, they mention a ton of games and the 360 fanboys just say “oh uncharted was stupid! we got gears!” and i’m thinking, “get a life! you have 3 games. what do ps3 owners have 15+ and we’re barely a few years into the ps3’s life cycle.” haha

besides i think the wii is the worst console ever
i mean i like the way i control my caracter but who in the world would want to play with mario or barney or what ever games they’ve got
i think sony will be saved soon at least with ps3 you wouldn’t have a heart attack every time you have the red rings. even so …the best games i played untill now is gears of war, gears of war 2, ninja gaiden, ninja gaiden 2,devil may cry, resident evil 4 and god of war …….as you can see most of them are xbox exclusives

Honestly, aside from the price, the main reason I went Xbox instead of PS3 (aside from the price gap) is that there were just more exclusives for the Xbox that I was interested in than there were on the PS3. Not to say there aren’t good ones for the PS3, but there were just more on the Xbox for me. Plus, I’m not missing out too hard since Sony seems to be losing its grip on total exclusivity with major titles like it did on the PS2 and 1.

Oh, and let me also add the qualifier that an exclusive for me also means a cross-platform title that I wouldn’t have to buy a PS3 to play. If I somehow won a system or got one as a gift, different story.

      1. PS3 is expensive compared to other consoles.

      2. Blu-ray in the US I don’t know, but over here in Europe it’s a non-factor, nobody really cares about Blu-ray and I don’t know anyone who owns a Blu-ray-Player that is not a PS3.

      3. Sony has no big exclusives.

      4. Multiplatform games tend to look (slightly) better on Xbox 360.

The only ace that Sony has up their sleeve is product quality, but Microsoft someone contains the RROD-fiasco very good.

I just think Microsoft were very good in their business strategy in being first to market. The Wii did something different (in the publics eyes) so that’s in a world of its own, but the PS3 was ‘late’ and was the most expensive AND people weren’t as fussed about blu-ray - a lot of people don’t really ‘get’ Hi-Def. In Europe, at the mo, it’s expensive to have Hi-Def anything really, so blu-ray wasn’t top of the agenda. So for gaming, people went for 360 or Wii.
I think the PS3 is doing better now. I own a PS3 and Wii and personally I really like them both. I would like a 360 for Halo maybe, but no need to buy it just for that.

My friend that is an ignorant point you make. The PS3 has the most quality exclusives at the moment. PS3 at the moment is the system with the most value and the best exclusives in 2008 and there is nothing 360 can pull off to beat the 2009 line PS3 line up. Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles (08′ exclusives that received critical acclaim) and blu-ray are enough to justify the purchase of a PS3. Most games on the 360 are ported to the PC but for argument sake we will consider them. This year the 360 had three must own games Left 4 Dead, Gears 2 and Fable while the PS3 had 4 and PS3 got the improved version of Bioshock. Game sites like IGN have already declared that it was the year of the PS3 in terms of the exclusives. As for 2009 PS3 has yet again strongest line up of exclusives. Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, God of War 3 and white knight Chronicles just to name a few. As far multiplatform games, now they look equally as good on the PS3 as the 360. Blu-ray is also growing a speedy rate just look at the dark knight sales and iron man sales. PS3 has the most bright future, the one thing stopping it the price. This console is capable of outselling the Wii if its price it put close to the Wii say about $279. Also point to be noted PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide in 2008 even after Microsoft having major price advantage

@just love to talk about shity stuff:

Um…dude…only half of those games you listed were exclusives. Ninja Gaiden and RE4 are on both systems. And, you mentioned Gears of War and Gears of War 2 as two separate games, but only mentioned one God of War, not God of War 2…so really your list should have only included Gears of War, and Ninja Gaiden 2 as exclusives, or at least add God of War 2 as an option by following your logic.

That CNN reporter doesn’t know shizzles about anything, he’s one of the idiot ‘analysts’ who read sales charts and then claim to be able to predict the future, because of idiots like him the economy is in its current state. He should shut up, the PS3 is in fantastic shape as of now, all it needs is a price cut and ps3s will fly off shelves.

I didn’t know if to laugh or cry when I read that CNN-article. The CNN-brand is a respected brand (most of the time), and I cannot see why they would put their name on a thing like that.

      The author named three things:

      1) The price –> no argument from me.
      2) The BluRay –> The writer claimed you needed a 50″ TV to even notice the difference between full (1080p) HD and standard definition. Obviously the writer doesn’t know what he is talking about.
      3) No games –> This was true in the beginning of the PS3 lifecycle, but it’s nowhere near true these days. The PS3 is often the lead platform for shared titles, and the bad ports seems to be a thing of the past. When talking about the exclusives, the Sony platform had a good year, and released quite a few really good titles. The 360 also had it’s share of nice titles, no question about it. I, personally, would have to give the edge to Sony this year though, but it’s honestly a matter of taste. However, the “no-games-for-the-PS3-argument”-must die, right now. It’s simply not true. There are actually more high-quality games for the PS3 on the shelves right now than most gamers can afford, or find the time, to play.

The strange thing about all of this is that there seems to be a strange “understanding” between employees at gameshops, journalists, etc. that is somewhat anti-PS3.

I recently got a mail from my gamestore (webhallen.com) where they more or less told their customers not to buy PS3:s from them (one of the most stupid newsletters ever written, by the way). When I visit stores, the demo-ex of the PS3 is rarely up an running, but the 360s are always active, when I overhear discussions between customers and game-shop-employees, the “no-games-for-PS3″-argument pops up, over and over. I’m getting rather tired of this.

I don’t care if Microsoft or Sony makes the most money this generation, I don’t really care about the Fanboy-wars. The PS3-platform has sold about 17 million units so far. It’s not a failure. Even if it’s not selling another unit, it’s still a respectable amount of customers, and more than enough customers to keep producing high quality games for. I do wonder, however, if Sony crossed some invisible line, stepped on the collective toes of the journalist community, or something equally hideous. Why is every journalist eager to point the finger at Sonys delays or mistakes, while looking the other way when MS makes them?

Thank you for reading this far. It’s very late where I am, but I hope some of my thoughts made any sense to you.

      /Cam

I think CNN hit the nail on the head. I don’t think Blu Ray is going to do well this year, I know I don’t care about it. As far as exclusives, you and I may think the PS3 has a great list of exclusives this year, but most people probably don’t even know they exist. The PS3 is in big trouble, and I don’t think there is much that Sony can do to right the situation.

Ok, I don’t want to argue. I like my PS3. I’m happy I bought it and i think there are enough good games on it to justify the purchase. But honestly, all you people out there saying what an idiot this guy is, please explain to me why the PS3 sold so much less this year than last year. No successful console has EVER sold less from one holiday to the next in its first 2-3 years. So, fine, I’ll agree this guy is wrong, but whats the right answer? If the PS3 isn’t too much $ and Blu-Ray is kicking ass, then why aint the thing selling better than last year? I’m honestly curious.

I disagree with the idea that the PS3 is the Titanic for several reasons.

      1) They understood that game production is expensive and that 3rd parties would go multiplatform and Sony has made the right decision to invest in its first party, since it is exclusive that separate platforms.

      2) Blu-Ray is gaining momentum, remember just over a year ago when many people were not sure what BR was and still today many think it has to do with movies but slowly that is changing.

      3) Many of Sony’s big name games are coming in 09 3 exclusives for example, God of War 3, GT5, and Team Ico game and many more.

      4) Home will continue to grow and will become a much bigger selling point for consumers as they can play mini games hang out and chat etc…

      5) There needs to be a price cut, but that is a possibility in the future and coupling a price cut with the release of GT5 along with a massive add campaign for BR and Home and this whole “console war” could change.

I think its very possible for Sony to change all this but it’s all in their hands.

all i know is i traded in my replacement 360 after my THIRD RROD and got a PS3 and i haven’t looked back. yes, i miss halo 3, and geow2 looks even better than the first one. but ps3 still has LBP (best game i’ve played this gen) mgs4, warhawk, motorstorm: pacific rift (highly underrated, one of my fave racers ever), wipeout hd… and these are just the games i’ve played in the last six months. still haven’t played uncharted, ratchet & clank or r2 yet, and several people have told me uncharted is the best game on the system. although ps3 lacks party and cross game vox chat the xmb interface is actually fine for organising games (i never realised how overrated the XBL stuff is until i got a ps3, the sony stuff is basically just as good and is FREE). seriously, i miss 360 games but fucking 3 rrod? gtfo.

I think Bluray is doing great, or is pretty to dumb to see movies coming to it like: Dark Knight? that’s one of the biggest reasons people want a bluray player and MS wants Bluray but can’t get it because its own by Sony which is the reason all 260 fanboys cry about it.

ok, ps3 sales have been very good this year, it sucks that this past month the sales dropped, but i saw a sales chart and ps3 was outselling 360 pretty much all year, and 360 just now caught up.

anyways i am tired of people saying ps3 has no good games. tell me what exclusives does 360 have?

gears2 …. ok well ps3 has resistance2 and socom, sure you can argue what game is better, but R2 has great 8 player co-op and 60 player online with no lag… it is very up to par, and to many people (including me, i owned the first gears and R1) R2 is more fun with its unque weapons.

fable 2 …. ok well ps3 has valkria chronicles, personally i dont want EITHER of those but valkyria chronicles has been getting STELLER reviews, but fable 2 just has the hype train. sorta like how folklore came out for ps3 with mid 9’s across the board and still nobody cared because it wasnt made by MS/epic/bungie/peter molyneux….

and really… thats about it. cept maybe banjo, but thats been getting some mediocre scores. and LBP is definitally a better family friendly contender.

ps3 has numerous great exclusives in every genre. racing: motorstorm2, gt5: pro, wideout HD (for only $20!!!), shooters: resistance2, socom (other then IGN, it got decently good scores), and killzone2 (dont worry i wont mention that POS haze haha).

but anyways, id like to also say that even if ps3 has more of these exclusives that i personally think (well and most critics) are great, doesnt change the fact that 360 has great exclusives too, i just think ps3 has a wider range of variety… and GOOD variety at that.

personally i would wish the stupid media would bring up the fact that wii has the worst library of all three systems, and no big game this holiday season.

The ps3 is in fact sinking and the price drop from M$ part is a sing that they are trying to compete with nintendo, the fact realy is the Wii is kicking the crap out of both of them. Now that is reality and Sony and Micro$oft know that, too bad for Sony but the went too ahead of time, that is way to much technology for a system, the should have at least kept it clean like the xbox 360 but with higher manufacturing quality, then they would had a chance, if you think about it, at the rate that xbox 360 hardware fails with the ring of death, Sony would have had the upper hand in the generation but the went balistic and beefed up their console with too much high tech. In the end they did not learned the lesson form past companies like SEGA, look at them they are out of the hardware race because the fail again and again in trying too hard to be high tech. So as a final word learn form past mistakes.

please someone tell to this dude that has wrote this article we don’t need his personal and wrong opinions to make our choice .Now I can understand that american economy is in heavy recession so he defend american products but if you read “Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.” you understand immediatly that this is a Microsoft’s fanboy and don’t know anything about gaming industries.

Why does one article say no one cares about blu ray, and in other articles they say there flying off the shelves and everyone wants one for Christmas. Even if the PS3 went down they would proberly keep making blu ray movies and you could use your PS3 for that.

I will bet all your PSdouchebags 100,000 dollars that God of War doesn’t come untill November 2010. Mark my words if it’s come out in 2009 I’ll trade in all my game consoles and stop playing. Please stop saying 09 is the year of the PS3, cuz 07 was supposed to be, then 08, now it’s 09. After another “so-so” year in 09 it’lll be WAIT!!!! God of war 3 comes out in 10, thats the year of the PS3. My ass.

I love the fact that your name is Your in Denial. It describes you perfectly. You are in denial and the fact that you’re in denial is based upon a sever lack of knowledge and a good measure of MS worship. The incorrect grammar is the perfect metaphor for you.

The idea that you list 360 exclusives means little more that you were gullible enough to buy some of them. Too Human? Please. You’re in denial. An outdated piece of malfunctioning hardware backed by a last generation storage medium is no excuse. I can pull out my N64 or PS1 and wipe the floor with your exclusives.

As regards the price cut and the PS3 in trouble I am laughing at people here that are in denial. The article is predicated solely upon sales in the US. Once you combine the sales with Japan the PS3 moves ahead of the 360 by about 30,000 consoles. THAT’S RIGHT, ADD A MERE TWO SALES REGIONS TOGETHER AND THE 360 FALLS TO LAST PLACE.

If you throw Europe into the mix then the 360 really takes a beating.

Microsoft is the master of spin and it is funny to watch acolytes fall under their master’s spell. In worldwide sales the PS3 is ensconced in 2nd place ahead of the 360 and no amount of spin or crappy exclusives is going to change that fact. Go ahead and say otherwise but YOU’RE IN DENIAL.

It is obvious that Playstation 3 has failed and the people who don’t admit it they are just dreaming and deny the truth. Especially after the current recession and the resolution of sony to fire 8000 empoyees and close out some of theri plants, the future of Playstation 3 is realy gloomy.

“The only ace that Sony has up their sleeve is product quality, but Microsoft someone contains the RROD-fiasco very good.”

No kidding…it’s amazing how Microsoft gets away with this and how Xbox360 owners don’t seem to care after getting their console replaced 2 or 3 times.

Hey Speedy did you know how you read or you just born dumb? It said Sony laid of 8,000 people but not from Sonys game developers side, MS will do the same….oh wait by want I heard they did because their cheap 360 isn’t making the money to pay people. An if you want to say thats wrong then think of this: If you make get only 200 every two weeks from your job are you going to be able to live off of that while having a family? no.

Learn to read better you retard.

Those 8000 people laid off were not from the PlayStation division. MS just laid of people too but they were not from the 360 division. Do you want to consider them to be? Just one more person that has bought into the MS spin.

I really wanted a ps3 when it came out. My wife bought me one and I was thrilled. But I have been let down. I’ve only ever bought 5 games for it. Motorstorm, lair, Resistance, ratchet and clank and heavenly sword. Most multi platforms I get on 360 bcuz of xbl. I actually deleted ps home. Its incredibly dumb. I did enjoy the ps3 games however, the controller feels like a toy and is of a terrible design. Ps3 gets 5/10. X360 9/10. I like my wii but cmon… It gets 5/10

It seems like a lot of analysyts forgot that Sony sated at the very beginning that it had a 10 year plan for the systemas it had with the PS2 & original Playstation. They have a long term plan and being that they aren’t even a quarter of the way into the consoles projected life span I think they have done a very solid job. Just to give some examples allow me to provide a list of games that I purchased for my PS3 over the last two-years(please keep in mind I am only listing exclusive games): Resistance 1 & 2, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Folklore, Warhawk, Eye of Judgment, Little Big Planet, & Metal Gear Solid 4). Also take into account that I did not list any games off of the PSN that are out.
Now that we have touched on what has already come out for the system let’s take a look at next year. 2009 brings Infamous, God of War 2, White Knight Cronicles, Uncharted 2, and don’t let me forget to mention Killzone 2; which in my opinion is on of the most amazing games ever produced for a console(both graphics and gameplay considered). Then you still have to take into account that Sony is becoming the sstandout console for trying to bring MMO’s to the console market with both DC Universe Online and The Agency currently in production. Also you can’t forget that there is still the PS3 exclusive FFXIII Versusand probably a third Kingdom Hearts game coming in the next few years.
Now don’t get me wrong I have no problem with the 360 and I plan on purchasing one sometime next year but I just think overall the PS3 has had a great start for itself when you look past all of the negative press and it is just getting started. Personally if you ask me as a hardcore gamer I think both the PS3 and the 360 have done a great job of catering to me and if anyone has dropped the ball it has been Nintendo, I understand that the Wii has catered to a new market the casual gamer but looking into the future when the next wave of consoles come out I don’t think it is very likely that casual gamers will see a need to upgrade from their Wii and Nintendo has made no attempt to bring any new IP’s of any quality that can be expanded on for the future while both Microsoft and Sony have already created a solid platform to leap off of.

I could have gotten a “good” Blu-Ray player recently for about $130. I passed. Why? Primarily because I buy a lot of movies, and I’m not paying $25-$30 for Blu-Ray disks. And I’m happy with the quality of my DVD’s as well. Blu-Ray is simply not a strong enough selling point to justify a PS3. I don’t want a $400 Blu-Ray player that just happens to have a couple of good games. I want a cheaper PS3 that plays LOTS of good games, and just happens to run Blu-Rays as well (for the future, when they finally come down to a reasonable price).

      Listening, Sony?

Why does everyone always leave-out Disgaea 3 as another amazing PS3 exclusive?!

Looking at my 374 hour save file for it, tells me that I probably played it hands-down more than any other game this year, across all consoles.

This year, finally, MGS4 + LBP + Disgaea 3 + Valkyria Chronicles made my PS3 worth it.

yeah righ CNN there prob told to say that , american news channel . yes maybe xbox is up because of price and gears of war 2 when gears get boring these consoles will drop again in price , everyone wants bluray its hi def dvd , more people will buy hd tv’s then playstation will be the number 1 console just to have , the price needs to come down 50 quid thats all , people would buy by the thousands at a rrp of £200 also a new number of second hand buyers later that month would benifit also buying into more games especially as most of the new releases are sony anyway maybe giving vouchers as well for money of blueray at blockbusters just to steal some more buyers cash.,
as the xbox isnt wireless or blueray i wouldnt buy it again , its a waste of cash , a console i think last time i looked was £180 then u had to buy all the little extras and the machine itself is made of crap , i wouldnt even suggest to anyone buy a xbox unless u just want to play halo and gears of war
