The first releases of a new year. Can you smell that hope and promise that a new year brings? Nintendo can, I think. This week’s releases are a bit up in the air. We only get two games, but I’m pretty sure they could both be good. WiiWare will see the release of Sandy Beach (Konami, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points) and the VC will be getting Kirby’s Dream Land 3 (Super NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points).
While Sandy Beach sounds like a bunch of crappy beach mini-games it is in fact a sandcastle building simulator. Wait! Don’t go, it’s from Konami, so there’s actually more to it. On top of being able to simply build sandcastles (a function obviously geared to the casual crowd) the game has another mode which turns it into what sound like a truly interesting tower defense game. Players will be able to craft their own castles and then defend them from invading crabs in the Crab Attack mode. You can insert your own sexual pun here, but I’m actually intrigued by the idea.
As for Kirby, his games always blend together for me into one giant enemy consuming, pink blur. Oh, except for Canvas Curse — that game was a-frickin-mazing. Anyway, that being said, I can’t really remember if Dream Land 3 was any better than all the rest, but since Superstar is out on the DS I don’t see much of a point of grabbing this one.
