Hurray for Final Fantasy XIII’s newest playable character, a refreshing break from the spiky-haired, pale-faced, sexually-androgynous JRPG status quo. The latest issue of V-Jump gives us a first look at Sazh Kalzroy, who “likes the color green, wields two pistol-like weapons and has a soft spot for Chocobos.” And yeah, he’s black. This could be awesome or abysmal, depending on how he’s portrayed in the game — let’s hope Square Enix doesn’t screw this up and turn him into a walking, talking amalgamation of stereotypes. Apparently, the isolated island nation doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to racial sensitivity.

So, we’re hoping he doesn’t pop into a scene and ask, “Where all the white women at?”? That’s counterintuitive.

I’m already preparing myself for the stereotypical script and voice-over.

Since Barrett is my favorite FF character, this can’t be no less than awesome.

Apparently Tetsuya Nomura is taking Sazh character design “seriously”…whatever that means.
