Video retail giant Tsutaya, the Japanese equivalent of Blockbuster, has launched a campaign today in celebration of Metal Gear Solid 4 featuring series-creator and film-lover Hideo Kojima’s picks for the movies that most influenced his award-winning series:
These mostly classic movies(listed below) might disappoint those hoping for more obscure choices, but all fans of the series will be interested to learn how these decidedly Western-flicks influenced even the smallest of details. On Tsutaya’s campaign-specific website, Kojima offers some insight into how the films shaped the world of the games, citing Sean Connery’s portrayal of 007 as the genesis of all things Metal Gear;;Black Hawk Down as a reference for the lighting, color and atmosphere; Predator as the inspiration for octocamo; 2001: A Space Odyssey as the source of Snake (David) and Otacon’s (Hal) real names; and The Deer Hunter as the origin of Snake’s trademark bandanna. Add Escape From New York to the list and you have yourself the ultimate Metal Gear movie marathon.
- The Guns of Navarone
- The Great Escape
- Goldfinger
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Planet of the Apes
- The Deer Hunter
- Dawn of the Dead
- Full Metal Jacket

So, he basically watched these movies, ripped off a couple things from each, and then made a video game on that stolen material? Weak.
As a fan of the first Metal Gear Solid I have to say PEANUT SAUCE to that mess.
And to any nay-sayer: COME ON, DAVID AND HAL? GODDAMMIT.

Ok, so what about Escape from New York, or are we talking about the game and not the complete rip off of the star character?
