Winter needs to come to Wii
BY Dennis Lesica Jan. 20th, 2009 More on:

I don’t think there’s any argument against the need and desire for darker, more mature games on Wii. Unfortunately, publishers just don’t want to roll the dice and take a chance on pushing dark and scary content to the happy, white box of familial joy. n-Space, developers of the underrated Geist for GameCube, know this all too well and have come forth, unveiling exclusively to IGN, their publisher-scaring survival horror Wii title, Winter.

In an interview with IGN, current n-Space president, Dan O’Leary and creative director, Ted Newman, discuss the story behind how Winter came to be; from origin, Wii controls, what the true spirit of survival horror is all about (no pun, I swear!) and the vicious cycle of mature games being shunned on Wii. Not only is it a great look at an extremely intriguing game that I want more than a Christmas pony and Razak’s respect, it also offers great insight into what kind of odds developers are facing in getting their games published when things stop being polite and start getting real.

Personally, I’m 100 percent behind this title hitting us in our scared little faces. I think there’s a real market for this type of game on Wii and I don’t think I’m alone — this game needs to happen. Maybe if we stomp our feet and hold our breath until we turn blue, a magical fairy will descend from the heavens and make it happen. I’m putting scary things under my pillow tonight.

“Winter” deserves to be published, it’s a title that delivers on all those special Wii promises when first publicly announced, and capture that imagination and innovation of Wii is all about in so many ways. Clearly, this is a game that people want to play!

I would agree with the developers if I only owned a Wii. But I own other consoles too, so I’d rather have it on them. It wouldn’t play any worse, and it would certainly look better. And looking better is good when it comes to being scary.

I’m excited. If Winter is successful, maybe we can get some real, live RPGs onto the Wii

Winter looks like a great game by the looks of it, If only publishers realized that games like this sell…

I think the time when it got canned (07) was a little early for publishers to get behind the Wii, but now, with games like conduit and madworld already coming up in few months and more importantly wii has installed base of around 50% of the market, it seems much more likely that someone will pick this up.

This game looks like a true survival horror and given the dearth of such titles (not only on wii but quite in genera) it could well be a decent game sales-wise.

It looks like a PS2 game with slightly better light sourcing and the same old puzzles that we’ve been using for twenty years. Need key, find key, get key, use key. SIlent Hill: Homecoming had the same problem on the 360. Survival horror COULD be a great draw on the Wii, but the games need to be actually innovative beyond the control system. Using a key on a door by waggling your remote is the same as using a key on the door by pressing X. If I could crowbar the door, use the key, shoulder it, shoot the lock or find some other way of getting into the room, then I’d be interested.

Winter will sell about fourteen copies in the UK, which still believes that even an attempt at innovation is the devil’s work and that Wii Fit and Wii Sports are the only thing that you’re allowed to use with the Wii.

Maybe if cursed mountain sells well this will get published or if SEGA’s adult games do well. Also Aaron, have you played Tales of Symphonia yet. Not the best ever, but a solid RPG.

Any idea when this is due out? It looks pretty great. And @Ken Barnes, I liked Homecoming quite a bit. Yes, Survival Horror puzzles are kind of lame, but the exploration, lighting, atmosphere and combat from the video made Winter look pretty damn good.

If I had a store in the mall that sold pink sheets of paper to little girls and their families, and my store was very popular, I would never imagine trying to then sell nails and beef jerky.

Although I like the idea of some amount of “grabby” technology wherein I can move my arm up to open a door, it’s not enough. If this game could come out for a console that could make it better looking then I have no interest in pigeon holing it, dig?

I will say that Winter does look pretty good, however I must agree with Ken on this one…the possibilities of things like getting into a room, like Ken is talking about, should have been explored. With a format like the Wii the programmers could have really gone in depth with things like that. However, if winter does come out, I will be purchasing it, yes the graphics lack, as do mostly all Wii games but the gameplay is the important part on the Wii.

The concept is interesting, and the survival horror genre has a lot of potential with the Wii Remote. Zack and WIki showed just how effective it can be when interacting with the environment. The graphics are a good start, and would clearly be improved if development were started on the game proper. I really hope this game finds a publisher.

Some of us have always known or felt how great these kind of games would be on the Wii. The control really does help to further immerse gamers. I mean, who didn’t get at least a little turned on when they first saw Sadness? How about the new Fatal Frame and yeah Cursed Mountain? I think that the Wiimote has a lot to offer the genre, just like the FPS. We just need more games!!

Oh, and depending on what scary things you’re putting under your pillow, I’d imagine you already have Razak’s respect if not his fear.
