Leipzig Games Convention 2009 cancelled
BY Tommy Lawler Jan. 29th, 2009 More on:

Originally scheduled for August 20-23, the German games convention has cancelled the keg orders and the dancers. The party ain’t happening this year. It’s likely due in no small part to the competing Gamescon in Cologne, also in Germany, taking place that same weekend and which looks to be picking up the momentum that Leipzig had been losing. Wolfgang Marzin, CEO of the convention’s hosting company, Leipziger Messe, did announce a shift in focus to online browser and mobile gaming with a convention for them likely to take place July 31 to August 2.

Overall, doesn’t seem like a significant loss considering Cologne will be there and is supposedly getting the attention of the big names you’d want at a convention. Plus hey, who knows? Some attention to the mobile and browser games may turn out to pleasantly surprise us all with what’s in store. Maybe…

The backstory behind this is that Leipzig is just to small for such a big convention. They don’t have enough hotels there, so people had to sleep in smaller towns arround the city.
The economy of Leipzig isn’t that great because it’s in east Germany so they wanted to keep the convention there. It was already set in stone that the original convention moves to Cologne, so they decided to make their own convention.
Cologne is a better place for foreign visitors, the convention center is more accessible and there are more hotels. GamesCon is the old Games Convention, just with a new name and on a new place.
