I love the smell of WiiWare in the morning. Actually, not always. Sometimes I take a look at the Nintendo press release and roll my eyes in sadness and disappointment at what is coming out on WiiWare. Thankfully, most of the time the VC has something solid coming out to balance it all out. This week things are a bit flipped though with the intriguing BIT.TRIP BEAT (Aksys Games, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points) hitting WiiWare and the not so exciting Summer Games II (Commodore 64, 1-8 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points) flopping onto the VC.
BIT.TRIP BEAT is a retro rhythm game with 8-bit soundtracks and old school visuals that lets players pound along with the beat with up to four people. The game not only looks fun and creative as hell, but if you head over to the official site and watch the trailer you’re going to have some music stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Anyone else getting a REZ vibe? Original music, creative design, independent developer; this is what WiiWare was made for.
And now to get depressing again. Summer Games II is not what the VC was made for. When Nintendo announced the VC I figured they’d stop uploading games once they got all the classics. I mean, there are just some games that no one really wants to play again and crappy Olympic knock-offs are one of those types of games. Plus, there are still classic games out there that haven’t been ported over, why are we wasting our time with this?
