Uncharted 2’s faces of fear

Out favorite Germanic gaming site, Cynamite, has posted some shiny new screens of our favorite treasure trolling action-adventure sequel, the upcoming Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Clearly developer Naughty Dog is upping the ante in terms of visuals – from the settings, to the environmental effects to the animations, everything about this sequel looks incredibly natural and realistic. Even the expressions of britches-biting fear as playable and non-playable characters alike prepare to plummet thousands of feet to their death, experience the sweet caress of a closed fist to the balls, and accept the inevitable fate destined to befall all nameless, generic enemy soldiers. It’s not retirement.

Of all the gorgeous screens I’ve seen for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, none has so beautifully, brilliantly encompassed the wealth of human feeling like this series of shots of some dude getting yanked off a building. This brave soldier, unamed and unmourned, hauls some serious ass through the stages of grief. Observe:

First there is shock, a numbed disbelief of the reality of what is about to happen, namely getting pulled to your doom mere minutes before your union mandated break. Shock could last for days, even weeks, unless of course you’re this guy, in which case you fast track to…

Pain, the kind only experienced when some sort of Abercrombie ninja leaps out of nowhere and grabs a fistful of your factory outlet kevlar, cinching it agonizingly around your “little soldiers.” This will understandably lead to…

Anger. Searing, blazing and ultimately ineffectual anger. Seriously, this guy’s got a grip like a silverback on a three-day meth bender. No wonder you’re starting to feel…

Depressed. Go on, let those tear out. It’s time to tear down your last remaining emotional walls with the sledgehammer of self reflection, only then can you build a life firmly grounded in and bolstered by…

Acceptance. You’re going to fall, so brace for impact. After all the turmoil you’ve experienced, you’ll never be able to return to the carefree, untroubled you that existed before, but you can still move forward. You can find a way. You can build a life. Afterall, it’s not that far a drop.

Oh, shit.

Sleep the sleep of the just, gentle prince.
