Sony shows off PS3 firmware 2.70

This is one story we’re sure isn’t a clever April Fool’s joke. Over on the PlayStation Blog Eric Lempel walks us through the newest firmware for the PS3 which has been released today. Some of the biggest new features are the ability to create chat rooms from inside or outside a game. Up to 15 people can text each other in up to three rooms at once. The limit of files we can attach to a message has also been increased from 1MB to 3MB.

The other major feature lets us backup videos purchased from the PlayStation Store onto an external storage device. The main file can then be deleted from the PS3 hard drive and restored from the backup drive at our leisure. Any video purchased on the PSP can also be transferred to the PS3 hard drive without complication.
