Exit Altair, enter Ezio
BY Rain Anderson Apr. 10th, 2009 More on:

GameInformer has the first scoop on the next Assassin’s Creed, the mag teases, and has also posted a few snippets of information for us to chew on. For one, it apparently wasn’t Altair who was taught how to swim as everyone’s favorite medieval assassin has been traded in for a fellow named Ezio, “a young noble whose family was lost through rival ruling families’ betrayals.” Second, the Holy Land is history — like the teaser trailer that Ubisoft released earlier this week suggested, Assassin’s Creed 2 takes place in a Renaissance-era Venice. And finally, the posted GI cover shot gives a rather nice view of Ezio’s fancy threads and the now dual-blades, which it looks like have cost the poor guy a finger on each of his arms. Ouch, hope they’re worth it. (Update: Or not. On closer inspection, looks like this guy isn’t hardened enough to cut his own finger off. What a pansy!)

One would hope the rest of the information wouldn’t be let loose until the mag hits the stands but no such luck. ScrewAttack apparently got their hands on the mag early and has posted plenty of information about the game. Information like Ezio (full name Ezio Auditore de Firenze) can glide on Da Vinci’s flying machine, there’s a lot of new weapons in the game, enemies can be disarmed and their weapons used against them, there’s a special move for every weapon, and perhaps most interestingly, there are 16 unique mission types and none of them include pick pocketing or eavesdropping. Yay!

Check out the full list of info as posted on ScrewAttack as well as the full GI cover below.

- You’ll have a ton of new weapons to choose from including an axe, a hammer, a mace, a spear, 2 different sword types, a spear axe, and 2 smaller blades
- You CAN swim
- Da Vincis workshop is in the game
- Locations include Saint Marks Basilica, The Grand Canal, The Little Canal, and the Rialto bridge.
- The game opens in 1476, Altair is from 1191

- The main characters name is Ezio Auditore de Firenze

- You can disarm enemies and use their own weapons against them this time.
- Each weapon has a special move.
- 16 unique mission types.
- No more ease dropping or pick pocketing missions.
- If you get beat up to much you will need to see a street side doctor to regain full strength.
- Hidden objects (like flags in the first one) are there to uncover but this time if you track them down you will get in-game bonuses that make it worth your time.
- Items include, flags, statues, and gold coins and more that isnt mentioned.
- New enemy types with unique attitudes and weaknesses are present in the game. Archers are mentioned, as well as elite enemies, dagger wielders, “Brutish” armored troops with heavy armor and 2 handed swords and axes, and an intelligent halberd enemy will probe hiding places with their weapons if they think you’re near by.
- While hiding in a hay bail you can assassinate people this time, but it may expose your position.
- You can still climb towers and ride horses
- The Lorendo de Medici assassination attempt is in the game.
- There is now a night and day sequence in the game.
- 240 people are working on this title.

What the hell is the point to having two of those blades? I don’t understand. And Altair is clearly more hardcore about this because his ring finger was straight up chopped off for that thing. I guess he has two as compensation for that. I’m already calling him Raiden 2.

I actually liked the pickpocket and eavesdropping missions, but they did get a bit old after the 8th or so time of doing them. I liked the idea that you had to scope out your prey before taking them out. It added an element of mystery and discovery like an adventure game would have.

I have my doubts about the second blade too. One was cool, unique. But two? I hope he knows how to dance on them or do something equally awesome.

Raiden 2? AKA another BADASS? Sure he was a bit whiny in MGS2, but as I recall, he kicked Solidus’s ass in the end…with a sword. And though I have not played MGS4, …well, I’ve seen enough ass kicking to prove my point in the trailers.

I’m interested in this new character, really…I wonder about his connections with the Assassins? Is he bitter and questioning, like Altair? Or is he more of a joker? Smiling is certainly something Altair never did, especially not like the one on Ezio’s face. He looks like a trickster.

And I’m REALLY interested in this flying machine aspect. A few friends of mine are giving me incredulous looks and are not particularly thrilled, but then I simply point out the ending to AC and say “if that’s realistic…then…”

Personally, I think gliding would be fun. I just can’t wait to find out more about this. I may stay away from more spoilers after this point, though. They reveal way too much beforehand these days.

I haven’t played the first, but other than a name change what are we seeing here? Will this be like putting Mario in a different outfit and time and calling him Bario?

Oh, no way. The characters look similar because they are related…ie, he is a descendant of the main character of the first game. But from the sounds of it, this game will be very different. The first game only had 4 weapons, there were only a few missions, and could become repetitive…but for me, it was just so beautifully done and the story was so intricate that I couldn’t help but love it. I highly recommend playing the first one before picking this up whenever it comes out. It’s only about $15 used now. >;D

The first one was pretty wicked i mean sure it did get REALLY repetative, but it doesnt mean that the moves were cool. and also i hope u can still climb as expertly in ac2 as in ac1, that was the coolest part of the game

lol the thing that makes me wonder is why does he hav a gun???? anyways… i lyk the name ezio, it means eagle and i lyk eagles. the 1st ac was awesome but got too easy for me…. and what maeks me wonder more is that he smiles… altair never did, but this guy does, and he’s not even an assassin. i lyk the idea of having 2 blades, and they are built inside ofhis arms!!! i find that pretty awesome xD
lol i just noticed that altair was taller than ezio, kinda funny for me.
in ac1 altair’s robes were thin and had wrapping around, but ezio is wearing baggy robes
if u compare altair and ezio u’ll see that they a hav a big difference between them! :D

The gun he has is an extremely old one, I think its called a ‘wheel cycle gun’, it only fires one shot, and takes llike 10 minutes to reload. Leonardo DaVinchi invented one of the first in the late 1400’s, which is when the game takes place.
