Mafia II gameplay footage blows, shoots stuff up
BY Rain Anderson Apr. 19th, 2009 More on:

Ok, confession time again — the original Mafia is one of those games that completely passed me by. But it’s been absolutely impossible not to know of the game’s existence due to the “zomg-it’s-awesome” screams of the people who have played it and the subsequential demands for a long overdue sequel.

But regardless of having missed the first game the entertaining trailers, handfuls of rather nice looking screenshots, and now some actual gameplay footage that’s surfaced from a Norwegian site have got me oddly excited for Mafia II. It may not look as good as the first screenshots (the 2:13 mark seems to be step back from the image above) but the voice acting sounds solid, the cover system looks to function properly, and who wouldn’t enjoy tearing their way through detailed 50s-era decor.

Hmm, I don’t know. The animations when you shoot somebody looked rather unrealistic and lame. Also, the driving seemed a bit weird. But hey, it’s hard to say when you’re not watching in HD. I’m one of those who LOVED the first Mafia and my expectations for Mafia II are huge.

It was the setting, the music and the all-around-feel that made the first one so great, I hope they don’t miss out on that.

My question is it like GTA where you just have your guy and you go the motions of its lame story? Or, is it like Godfather where everything from your guns, clothes, vehicles, to your avatar lvl up. Because these open world games TO ME are lame and have no real reason to play unless you can see your guy grow from a wuss to a bad ass mofo.

IMO Mafia is way better than both GTA and Godfather if you want to become a sophisticated badass.

But whats the gameplay like? Is there leveling or just a liner story to keep things going? I look at games like Fallout, Godfather, and Farcry as the future of open world games, and GTA as the past. The genre needs to evolve out of the mind numbing simplicity of the GTA series (minus San Andres). Because getting a better car, bigger apartment, and new set of clothes is not enough anymore. I know most people will probably disagree with me, but I feel those are the people that can spend hours just running around running hookers over with a car. I unfortunately need more than that.

Mafia is very storydriven and not does not involve leveling, except better cars, weapons etc. But it also differs from GTA because to me, that game justs overdoes it. There are too many places to go, there’s too much to do and there’s not really a big incentive for the player to progress through the game. There’s no need to run over hookers in Mafia because I believe the way the story unfolds keeps you focused and eager to play.

Mafia really shows how important the characters and story are in a game, but you can’t compare it to other “open world games” since it’s just.. totally different. Think of it as a good movie.
