Really, the only draw of celebrity voices in videogames these days seems to be that as it happens more and more, it’s a sign that our beloved medium is ever more embraced by pop culture. It seems more commercial than anything, because you never really know how well a film actor will do in these completely different circumstances. Well, joining the ranks of Keanu Reeves, Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson, and Jenna Jameson is recent Best Actor nominee for almost every major film award and winner of some, Mickey Rourke playing Richard “Demo Dick” Marcinko in the Bethesda-published Rogue Warrior.
The game, formerly in development by Zombie Studios and slated to be a tactical shooter, is now a one-man-army infiltration shooter in the nest of Rebellion Developments, who are most famous for the first Aliens vs. Predator computer game. The story is based on Marcinko’s novel of the same name, and loosely follows his exploits in North Korea to disrupt a ballistic missile program, only to uncover a larger conspiracy involving USSR, shifting “the balance of geopolitical power,” and “a trail of destruction in your wake.” The gameplay sounds to be a mix of raw action and stealth, with the ability to do some particularly brutal “silent kills” as well.
Some first-hand accounts are saying that Rourke turns in a performance meant to give personality to Marcinko, saying curse-laden quips at every given opportunity. Also, the general atmosphere is meant to reflect an 80’s action movie, complete with a ponytail-wearing protagonist. Not too shabby a setup, even if I do feel a little Duke Nukem vibe in there. Here’s hoping the gameplay’s awesome. Expect this one for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC some time in the fourth quarter of this year.
