E3 2009 / Relic takes Warhammer 40k in a new direction

Relic is fairly well known in the real-time strategy community as being one of the best developers when it comes to the RTS genre. Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are among some of the best recent RTS games to release. Action RPGs however, are something Relic is not known for, and incidentally is exactly what Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is.

We seem to be getting a lot of the Warhammer 40k IP lately. It was not too long ago that Relic dropped Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II and it was also announced that an MMORPG based on the Warhammer 40k universe was being made by another company. If the trailer above is any indication of how well Relic is making the transition away from RTS games, we would say they’re doing a damn good job. They’ve been a staple in the RTS genre bringing us quality title after quality title, and has done a great job handling the War 40k IP. So we’re not surprised that the new Space Marine action RPG looks as good as it does. It just makes us further wish that Relic was handling the Warhammer 40k MMO.
