Gran Turismo “dropped the ball,” Forza there to “pick it up” |

Did you know Forza Motorsport 3 is the definitive racing game this generation? In a behind closed doors demonstration of Forza 3 at E3 last week, the game’s creative director, Dan Greenawalt, reiterated this fact to us as he touched upon the experience he hopes gamers have with the definitive racing game. We were given a quick (almost lightspeed) look at the game’s on-track navigation arrows, what the underside of a Forza 3 car looks like, how pretty the water and lighting were and the controversial rewind feature which can be used infinitely and at any time during a race.
The total demo was about three minutes with Greenawalt basically redoing his Microsoft press conference speech for the rest of the session. It would’ve been nice to actually see more of the game in action and how it’s going to be able to appeal to hardcore racing fans, casual observers and children; the session was more PR claptrap than demo/interview as originally planned.
There was an interesting moment, however, when Greenawalt made a comment about Gran Turismo and its creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, influencing him greatly in becoming passionate about cars. In true Star Wars “apprentice becomes the master” fashion, he went on to say Gran Turismo has since “dropped the ball” and Forza is there to “pick it up.” Sweep the leg! It’s a pretty funny comment, but if you think about it, fans have been waiting for the full Gran Turismo 5 prior to the release of Forza 2 and with the third entry in the series set to launch in October, Greenawalt’s words have a ring of truth to them. Anyone else ready for a racing game dev catfight?

PD guys should really get GT out the door already. That ‘we can release it at any time but there’s always stuff we can improve upon’ talk from a few days ago is eerily similar to what 3D Realms practiced (not that DNF and GT would ever share the same fate). I want both games but by the time GT5 is finally out I’ve already played two full Forzas.

Forza is not what they keep saying it is. it itsn’t even a native 1080p game so it is not the definitive racing game. in order for it to be the definitive game it needs to be 1080p, have more cars, and have better physic, graphics, and gameplay.

Hey Forza, too bad none of your games will be as fun as CTR still is.

When gran turismo is released, it WILL set the standard for driving sims as it has in the past. Very few game developers work as hard as the guys at PD. Keep in mind GT5 will have some 800+ cars, full day/night cycles, weather effects, fully modeled cars, drift mode, WRC, Nascar, F1, damage… with 16 cars racing rendered at a Native 1080p60.
Sure, it’s been a long wait for GT5 no doubt, but when it’s out, you won’t have to play another racing game for years, guaranteed.

It’s sad how many will defend GT. GT5: Prologue was average at best. All that it offers is great visuals like previous GT games. The online is atrocious and the realism is laughable when you can speed into a wall at 120mph and bounce right off. By the time they actually implement damage into the game it will be fall 2010 at the earliest. Maybe the makers of Duke Nukem Forever should apply to the Polyphony team, they’ll fit right in.
It’s too bad Fora doesn’t have the mainstream appeal of GT. I guess GT fans are just as bad as Sony fanboys. No wonder they go hand in hand.

To be THE definitive racing game it has to encompass all racing types. I doubt it is possible for ANY dev to do that, as that would go from blacksheep and demolishion to F1 and IMSA. As well as all the types of motorcycle racing. As to whether GT5 or Forza is better, I think that depends entirely on the person playing the game and what their expectations are. I will get this game, but I doubt I will get anything accomplished on the promised drifting as I don’t think it is all that fun, but some out there will disagree with me until they die. Arguing back and forth as to which is better is is beyond stupidity, as the individual player determines that himself and cannot force anyone else to see his side with petty tactics like stating the PS3 has a better proc unit and better graphics, or stating (yet again) the PSP version of GT has more cars (most of which are the same car with a different paint job).
Find the game you like and preach it to others, but realize that there are people who are more than turned off by simply hating on the competition. It makes you look like a fanboy, and nobody likes them.

anybody who laughs at the physics of GT Prologue should know that the reason behind it was Kazunori Yamauchi’s absolute love of cars and that he didn’t liked the whole damaging the car aspect, call it whatever you want, but it was intentional and not a fault of Polyphony digital. I don’t understand why the devs of Forza 3 are saying such things, i mean its one thing to hype your game but its completely other thing to bad mouth the competition, sure Gt5 isn’t coming this year but aren’t Gt games notorious for their absolute attention to detail? what’s so wrong about that?, I’d rather wait longer for a quality product than playing a mediocre game. not that i am saying that Forza 3 is gonna be mediocre. but again…people need to shut the frack up for making fun of GT5 Prologue’s lack of damage physics. If you own the game go watch the documentary “beyond the Apex”…..

The only thing ” unrealistic ” about GT5:P is the lack of damage…But considering they didn’t want real-time damage in GT5:P it makes sense, DUH!, however PD WILL be implementing it in the full version of GT5. So shut your mouth if you are trash talking GT5:P cause its only a tiny tiny un-polished (it may be polished but its still not GT5) piece of GT5…
June 9th, 2009
at 10:53 pm
@ LevelHead, I find it ironic that you’re down-playing the realism in (or the lack thereof) GT5:P, yet this article clearly states that Forza3 will contain a ‘ rewind ‘ feature AND the forseen arrows on the track showing the recommended path to follow…- Is that not un-realistic? Keep in mind that the full version of GT5 will partake in real-time damage , as will Forza3, yet Forza3 still will feature the aforementioned ‘ arrows ‘ and the ‘ rewind ‘ options so which will be the less realistic racing sim: GT5 or Forza3?

Here is a fact: I am tired of waiting for GT 5. I have a PS3 and 360. Since I’m tired of waiting for GT 5 and Forza 3 is probably coming out first that means PD probably lost a sale.

@vang,
GT5 isnt native 1080p either. it is upscaled. Forza 3 has 1080p upscaling as well, so theyre both the same in that regard.

also, if youd ever played forza youd know that you can turn off the ‘recommended path arrows’, and anyone who plays it seriously does that straight away.
i assume you havent played it though, which doesnt surprise me.

While GT hasn’t officially gone next-gen (GT4 like its predecessor GT3 was a PS2 game while GT5 Prologue was a tease), Turn 10 is on its second game on the 360. I hope Dan didn’t forget the fact that Forza 2 was hardly an evolved product compared to the previous one: except for the improved Forza community and the online auction, the game was essentially the same.
Dan needs to pull more trick out of his sleeves other than the generic gameplay addition to F3. One thing for certain, the 8 player/car limit of Forza 3 is a bit unsettling especially if Forza 3 is being touted as a racing simulator. GT5 Prologue already has 16 cars for both SP and MP and 360 other exclusive Race Pro also clicking in at 16. Nordschliefe with only 8 cars on the grid is the equivalent of a orgy with only two people showing up.

GT5 Prologue runs at 1280 x 1080 (1920 x 1080 upscaled to fit 16:9 display ratio) but is essentially 1080p as oppose to Forza 3 1280 x 720 (upscaled to 1920 x 1080). The most important thing is that GT5 prologue has almost 400,000 pixels more than Forza 3.

I am sorry but whoever saw that Forza trailer (the one developer spent a month on) should be able to guess the physics in that. Dont laugh at GT damage model, look at the aweful Forza physics. Cars while racing turn 180 degrees and maintain the same speed as the two others cars on the side?!! PLEASE!
I am sure Forza will be a fun game but after all that trash talk from the developer, I wont feel bad for them if their game didnt ‘win’. Please go learn some manners Dan and the team.

You sound like a 360 Fanboy. GT series games have always set the standard for simulation racing. They are only available on Sony’s Console so I can understand the hate. Forza is only available on the 360 and PC. It seems like it will be a excellent game. But all this talk about PD dropping the ball is ridiculous. It is just a PR stunt to get people interested in their game. I would hope that the game would speak for itself. But maybe there is something to a developer talking a lot of garbage. Sony’s teams are talking with the games themselves. Microsofts seem to just like running their mouths. If I was a 360 Fanboy, I might worry why an exclusive game is worried about another exclusive game, that is not in anyway going to cut into their sales. They should be focused on their possible competition with NFS. But hey what do I know. I just love gaming.

I can see where the guy is coming from though.. not alot has changed in the GT series over the years besides the numbers of cars and the numbers of polygons. Forza has brought a real community aspect to the table. To me the GT series hasn’t changed much over the years in terms of gameplay.
He may not be going about it in the best of ways but you need to hype your game when it doesn’t have that instant brand name grab like GT. It’s playing 2nd fiddle in the genre with regards to the mainstream really.

the comment is surely cocky but hey where was Yamauchi for the last 5 years? creating some ridiculus on board program for Nissan? GT5 prologue??? The first version was so lame they had to add so many things. And still the game is so cold… and lets compared forza 2 to GT5 prologue. Beside the graphic Forza 2 wins it easy! that game is much more interesting and fun!
I used to be a big GT fan but the direction the game is taking and the godlike attitude Yamauchi is making me just wish Forza 3 will beat the hell out of GT5. And to finish… Nascar? WRC? the answers from polyphony to Forza 3 treat were just pathetic.
If Yamauchi would have launched a real and good GT5 in end of 2008 the PS3 would be probably outselling the 360 today.

@ken
How can you compare a full forza2 game to a £20 half way release game? That’s the dumbest comparison anyone can make and is just illogical.
As for saying that GT hasn’t changed much, that’s another piece of rubbish. To make it simple and set the facts right why car enthusiasts will always pick GT over Forza, here is a small list why that will shut up Forza lovers everywhere:
1) Variety of races and competitions to participate in. GT wins hands down and now it has the addition on WRC and NASCAR!
2) more cars with more info on each model as well as info on manufacturers.
3) license mode which teaches you how to race properly. In affect, a racing school.
4) better graphics and 7.1 surround sound.
5) GTTV- the ability to watch some of the best car programs in the world, including the number car program: Top Gear!
6) The top Gear track will be included in GT5 and anyone in the UK or Europe who loves Top Gear will be creaming their pants to beat Stigs times and celebrities times. All GT5 owners will be able to do this!
7) buying actual car parts and mods from websites for GT5.
8) the implementation of day and night cycles, weather and real time car damage.
9) additional features through the psp e.g ability to turn the psp into a rear view mirror!
10) PS Home integration for added content and rewards.
Forza is still a fun game, but still miles behind being a GT5. They may have released 2 Forza’s by the time GT5 is released, but they still lack in content next to their rival, they still lack the attention to detail and they still lack the little and big things that makes GT what it is- the best racing simulator on a console.

Forza = Racing Game; Gran Turismo = Driving Simulation. If you like to drive your car after you crashed at 200 mph, good for you. Go and play Burnout if you like crashing so much.

@Mak, this isn’t mainly an Xbox VRS Sony competition, we already know what’s better there. It’s a GT5 vrs F3. But wait……. what am I talking about, we already know who wins there too lol.

Why GT is the better game. For Arcadey racing, no. For driving simulation that real racing drivers practice on, yes.

If u think Froza is the top car game of this generation, go right ahead and think that!! U obviously DO NOT own a PlayStation! Even GT4 is better than forza, the editor says its the ‘definitive racing game of this gen’ uhh………… what other car racing sims have come out? NONE!! Well none worth mentioning, just wait till GT5 comes out u moron!! U can go on and on about Forza, cuz yr an xbot so of course u will just like u do wit Gears and Galo! Fucking twats!!

How can anyone defend GT5!!!! I have been waiting for the game for what seems like 10 years. It doesn’t matter if GT5 has 8000 cars and tracks. If you never get to play it it’s no better than vaporware. So the Forza guys have it right. They have been able to improve there game and make 2, maybe 3 releases before you get a COMPLETE GT5. I bought PS2 to play GT4 and I bought PS3 to play GT pro-short as hell demo. If they never finish and release the game how can it be compared to a game that I can actually play. They’ve only release a few cars in over a year for GT pro-short as hell demo. When they finish the game and somebody…anybody has played it that will be the time for this debate. And those features that make it easier for novice gamers can be turned off. Ramming a wall and still winning the race can’t.

Don’t you just love the Sony fanboys they are you just wait and see when they release GT5 you will see that is the game to have. Just because I was in jr high and now married with with children I am still waiting and I know it will be worth the wait, just wait and see! Ok ok Forza has done 2 games (so far) in the span that it took to do GT5. ok ok GT% might have damage modeling after 5 games they might finally have that part figured out kind of like how Forza had it figured out in all 3 games.
GT5 users think that damage modeling is innovative MEH….. GT5 better be perfect given the amount of time and how AWESOME Forza 3 looks..

LOOK AT ALL THE FANBOYS CRYING… WHENEVER THE HELL GT5 SHOWS UP IT’LL MATTER TILL THEN FORZA’S RUNNING THE SHOW. FACE IT. AND IF U GUYS HAVEN’T NOTICED THE NEW CONSOLES ARE COMING SOON 2-3 YEARS TOPS… WHICH DOESN’T GIVE YOU MUCH TIME… HURRY UP OR STFU.

First of all Microsoft shouldn’t be taking jabs @ Sony’s Gran Turismo.Yet people wonder why the growing number of Microsoft haters has increased it’s simply because of BS like this.. There are certain things you can do in Forza that just don’t translate to real life, and that rarely happens with GT. Furthermore, if you’re even going to bring up the idea of car damage, save your breath. You know what simulated damage is? It’s grazing a wall at 35 m.p.h. that can cripple your tire and send you to the pits. It’s getting bumped from behind and suffering an alignment issue that was no fault of your own. And if you want to get detailed, it’s effing up on an engine upgrade (can’t put the turbo in without altering the engine accordingly) and having your car blow up halfway down the straightaway.
Since when has Forza been as realistic as GT.Just face the facts Microsoft your XBOX is screwed. You don’t have what it takes to be on the Gaming Market anymore.Face it even the Playstation 4 will be even cheaper than the PS3 was this generation @ launch, because SONY secretly plans on using the same technology integrated into the PS3,but they will upgrade it to make it with 100% more improved graphics for the PS4 and the PS4 will be 4x more powerful than PS3,and way easier to make games for.The PS4 will launch worldwide in 2011.
Type in PS4 specs leaked this is no lie.
One more thing,I may own all 3 current gen. Systems but I see that the PS3 has the most potential, and it’s not maxed out on graphics like the Wii & 360.I also like the PS3 over all of them.

i own a 360 and a ps3 i am excited by forza 3 and i know it will be a good game, i say good and not great cause i thought forza 2 was gonna be great, it was just ok, not amazing not the best just good, now i have played every gran turismo going and i can say that each and every time i have been amazed by gt, by the obvious love that goes into the game itself, the detail, the info on every car the changes in performance when u upgrade the cars, And i have to admit that gt prologue looks better than forza 3 and gtp is a TWO YEAR OLD GAME. also the damage is a mute point because when ur driving ur not supposed to crash, damage will be in gt 5 so that sorts that out, full 1080p more cars, better graphics, more realistic gameplay, this is not about the consoles its about the games and i can safely say that GT will always be ahead of the pack.
June 10th, 2009
at 8:08 pm
GT5 is NOT full 1080p, when will you sony fanboys understand this!?
it is UPSCALED to 1080p.
i was always a big GT fan, but the series has shown very little improvement over the last 3 games. more cars and better graphics, thats basically the extent of it. same ice-skating driving physics, same bumper car racing, same poor sense of speed.
Forza just took everything that made GT good originally and made it better, and added new things like full customization, an incredible physics engine that updates 360 times per second, and great community features. the cars just feel and sound right. GT cars dont handle realistically - its not hard in real life to get a RWD + Turbo car sideways, to do burnouts, or to do doughnuts - but you simply cant do it in GT. in forza cars behave how they should.
