Mars developed for “complicated” PS3 first
BY Chad George Jun. 23rd, 2009 More on:

While talking about their upcoming action RPG Mars, due out in late 2010, Spiders Games CEO Jehanne Rousseau told That VideoGame Blog that they’re focused primarily on developing a great PS3 game first because “the PS3 is a very complicated platform.” Rousseau believes that PS3 owners are waiting on a good RPG for a system that has not been used to its best most of the time, and says the complication is actually a good thing. “[If] we concentrate now on all the difficulties and strong points of this console and if we can go over them, the other platforms should be more simple to approach.”

There’s still no concrete word on a Xbox 360 version though. While Rousseau says that Mars will look comparable on either console, as the developers do not want to “cheat the Xbox 360 owners,” a release on different platforms is dependent on the publisher.

Why not cheat the 360. PS3 users get the shaft all the time from lazy multiplatform devs. I love how currently PS3 exclusives visually look much better then 360 exclusive( the 3 or 4 they have {sarcasm})
Yet multiplatform devs cant make a perfectly identical game on both platforms. i mean WTF PS3 has the power the devs just want son to look bad or something what is up?

Devs are intimidated by parallel computing. Unfortunately for them, it is the future. Tacking on cores together ala i7 has it’s limitations.

@Dustin - She did say that they were focusing on the PS3 because it was complex, but if you get right down to it the 360 version (if is comes at all) will be a port of the PS3 version.

At least they are trying to get it right the first time around, no?

So let me get this straight. The PS3 has a smaller install base and it costs more to develop for, so they created the game for the PS3 first? Did I miss something? It seems to me that the better business decision would have been to make the XBox 360 the lead so they could get the game out more quickly and cheaply; thus creating cash flow.

On a side note nothing irritates me more than hearing a bunch of fanboys with absolutely no development experience calling developers lazy. You have no idea what it takes to develop serious software, and if you did you’d show a lot more empathy towards the developers that have to deal with Sony’s arcane architecture.

Personally I doubt that parallel computing is really the future. The problems confronting software include software coming in over schedule over budget, and the software tends to be unreliable. Performance is rarely a problem with software, but parallel computing only improves performance whilst exasperating the critical issues I just mentioned. In other words parallel computing doesn’t fix any problems it just creates more.

100% agree with u but unfortunately most dev teams dont have this same view. Im glad this game will get the right treatment for PS3 owners

      O @Edgar
We “fanboys” may have no development experince but we do know that some devs that take there time and are dedicated to PS3 DEVELOPMENT ACHIEVE GREATNESS. Look at Killzone 2s graphics god of war 3’s detail uncharted 2′S depth and detail. The truth is if a dev is devoted to a good game the can achieve there best with Sony. Dont go saying we have to clue when u ur self have just as little experience as any of us.

This statement fails to see the big picture, we are hitting a ceiling in computing power and our chips can only get so small, ( anyone who understands the limitations of physical silicon knows this ) with the demand for better graphics, physics, and features we are hitting a ceiling on the current console architecture, The inevitable solution to this will be to increase performance on existing silicon and the best easiest way to do this is Parallel Computation (cell) and memory optimization ( Flex I/O ) and this inevitably WILL BE THE FUTURE and the only console best poised to support this is clearly the ps3, also I fail to see how you are so sure that these people don’t know what they are talking about ? I know if I heard that a dev was under utilizing the ps3 on a game I was looking forward to and I happened to be a Naughty Dog DEV I would have every right to call them lazy as utilizing the SPU’s amazingly doesn’t seem to have hurt their development cycle at all :) oh and one last thing maybe these devs wanted to make the BEST GAME POSSIBLE NOT the most money $$$ isn’t everything to everyone and anyone looking to make the best console game they can should know the ps3 is the OMEGA console this gen

The obvious fact is, young development teams are a little scared to take a risk and develop solely for the PS3. They can see the power that it has. But developing the proper tools and getting the right engine for their games takes time and money. Then they have to of course develop the game they set out to develop. Sony Has let their first and second party developers show these young developer know some of the things that are possible with the PS3 and have even gone so far as to offer help and support for them as well. When the PS3 price drops sometime this year. Sony’s install base will skyrocket. Everyone by now can see who has the most powerful hardware. And with the excellent pedigree of high quality exclusives games and experiences coming out. More and more developers will decide to make exclusive products for Sony’s console. Their motion technology will be on the market sooner than M$ and it is my belief that it will be more fun. Developers will be able to take advantage of it much quicker than with Natal. And after that it’s all about the games and experiences that are available for each console. Sony is pushing the evelope in this regard. Microsoft isn’t. Eyepet, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Grantarismo, Uncharted 2, Modnation racers, The last Guardian, not to mention FFXIV, The Agent, Free realms, LA Noire, The Agency, Syphon Filter, MAG, DC Universe. I really don’t need to keep going. DO I!!!

What i don’t get is the loyalty to create a game that looks similar on both. What ever system can run a particular game better, should. Back in the PS2 games, all the multiplatform games tend to look a little better on the xbox, cuz it was more powerful. This generation should be the same, I hate that the developers may be holding back on either platform.

if all games are going to be on both platfroms, with 0 difference between them… im starting to see the stupidity of having 2 different products… id like to see games that dont work on an xbox and can only be done on ps3.

not because i like one platform more than the other, but because thers 0 point in 2 products if they have the same games.

Dustin: Killzone 2 took about 5 years to develop, so the developers at Guerrilla aren’t any less lazy than other developers they just took more time. Killzone 2 is a fantastic looking game, but it’s also a good illustration of all that is good and bad with Sony’s platform. Killzone 2 shows that if you have unlimited resources and unlimited time you can make an amazing game for the PS3. It also shows that it will take a lot of resources to truly take advantage of the power offered by the PS3. Most developers aren’t backed by Sony. Instead most developers are backed by third party publishers that are interested in turning a profit. The result is that publishers opt to not take advantage of the PS3’s power, because the cost of doing so is just bad business.

I don’t get it, Why are developers fuzzing about “trying” to make all versions the same??, If the PS3 is more powerful than the 360 (or viceversa), Why not make the most of either system and the other version be crappier and leave it like that?, That’s how it worked 4 years ago with the original Xbox and the PS2. And no, bad ports don’t count as saying that the 360 has superior hardware, that’s just the end result of laziness by the developers.

It’s like if Ferrari couldn’t put more than 350 horsepower into their cars just because Cadillac can’t. Really stupid isn’t it?

      Now, the untold story…

Mars is one of the very rare game using the PhyrEngine (just search on google with both name), a SCEE engine royalty free that runs on PS3 and PC. When using this engine, you don’t have to know anything about low level PS3 programming, “all” (haha) you need to know is the 5000+ pages of manual of the engine.

So, that’s easy for them to say the “chose” PS3 first because it was more “complicated” (surely because of the length of the manual and the fact they did not have to do anything low level).

It probably explains the comments about the difference between the PS3 and xbox360 versions…
