EA merges BioWare and Mythic to form new group
BY Emmanuel Petti Jun. 24th, 2009 More on:

In what has been labeled as “restructuring,” Mythic is being merged with BioWare to form a new RPG/MMO development group housed under the EA parent. As a result of the merge, Mythic’s general manager Mark Jacobs will be leaving the company and BioWare’s Ray Muzyka will take over as general manager of the new group.

Nothing has been said what will become of Mythic’s two MMOs Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online. We’re also not sure what this means for BioWare’s upcoming MMO Star Wars The Old Republic, if anything at all. They didn’t mention what brought on the merger and the dismissal of Mark Jacobs but all signs point to the struggles Warhammer Online has been facing since release. The best case scenario is that BioWare’s influence reaps benefits to Warhammer Online and Mythic’s influence helps BioWare avoid some of Mythic’s mistakes. Hopefully the merger of the two studios will result in a more robust studio well versed in MMOs and RPGs.

personally i gotta see this as a good thing. BioWare does a lot of things Mythic falls short on (story, faction interplay)… and Mythic does a lot that BioWare is still in the dark about (button mashing action, massively multiplayer environments).

let’s just hope the next GM is more game designer and less, um, wannabe rock star.
