id Software bought by ZeniMax Media
BY Evan Kutsko Jun. 24th, 2009 More on:

The creators of Doom, Quake, and the upcoming Rage, known over the years for kickstarting the FPS genre and setting benchmarks for graphics technology, are no longer an independent developer. They now have to answer to ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, who you might remember as the guys behind Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3. How does this affect the titles that id Software currently has in development? Not very much.

John Carmack, who will continue to serve as technical director of id, has even gone as far to say “I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am.” Statements were also made by Robert Altman of ZeniMax and Todd Hollenshead of id in which they expressed great optimism and mostly patted each other on the back, proving once again that CEOs love mergers and acquisitions.

The overall feel of this acquisition is that id Software is looking to take advantage of having more resources at their disposal while ZeniMax looks to make some more dough off of id’s unwavering product quality. Doesn’t sound half bad to me.
