The PSP Go always struck me as Sony’s attempt to ward off the advances of Apple in the gaming industry. There’s no question that the iPhone and iPod Touch are becoming a viable presence to game developers like Capcom or SquareEnix. When they’re filling millions of pockets, it’s only logical. So to make a comparably compact gaming console to compete seemed equally logical. Following that trend now are reports of Sony considering a similar product with phone functionality. Now it’s gone from defending their foothold to straight up competing.
While there’s not much detail, the idea is combining the function and style of their PSP systems with the Sony Ericsson line of cell phones. It’s stiff competition, no doubt, but let’s hope the battle is heated if this is all true. It would only be good for us consumers.
